Computer people: Will this laptop be as quick as my current box?

I'm replacing my desktop with a laptop.  Smaller footprint and 2-3 times per year portability when travelling are the drivers.  Need to keep it low-cost.

Current desktop has a celeron 2.4 w 1 gig ram.  I'll replace it with a AMD 2.3 d-series cpu and 3 gig ram.   Will I be sacrificing any speed or performance in my move to this new machine?   My needs are basically net surfing, MS word and ppt, movies, and WKO.

Sorry this is such an obtuse question.

  • Dave, no performance sacrifice, in fact, probably a gain with that much extra ram. those processors are each more than enough for what you are doing.

    Enjoy!
  • Thanks, Mike. My workstation just got a lot cleaner.
  • Dave, you will see a pretty good gain in performance. The quality of the new processor over your old one, is pretty significant. Two bits of advice: 1. buy as much as you can afford. This will help your new machine last longer for you. Go cheaper now and you might end up replacing the new one earlier than you would like. 2. buy a brand name that you can trust. There are too many no-name machines out there that are really inexpensive. Big name machines will come with support (some better than others) and you know who to call when something goes wrong. Anyway, my two cents.
