Christmas joys...and decisions?

I have had a great time on my current 'chariot', a Cervelo P1.  For Christmas, I am 99% sure my wife is giving me a P2.  So, this leaves me with a decision to make...what to do with the P1.

Here are my two thoughts...I am seeking feedback as to which option (or what other option) everything thinks I should take:

1.  Sell the P1 and put the proceeds to a power meter (through EN with the recommended EN specs).  If I do this, what can I even sell a P1 for (it is a 2008 model, in great condition, bone stock (no upgrades on anything))?

2.  If I can't get much for the P1, I was thinking about just hanging on to the P1 and leaving it up on the trainer.

3.  Part of me would love to get a Tacx or Computrainer for the next 2-3 months of indoor training, assuming I sold the P1.

MY thoughts are that #1 is the best option, assuming I could get a worthwhile sale on the P1.  Otherwise, I would hang on to it and buy a power meter in the Spring.

Or, is there a silent option #4 that is best?

Thanks guys!  Merry Christmas to me!

  • Computrainer is way cool, I have one, I love it, I've had it x5-6 years and put literally thousands of miles on it. That being said, get a power meter. Hands down a better buy. I would part with my computrainer without thinking twice about it, if it meant not being able to ride with power.
Option 1 is likely your best bet, #2 not too bad either.
  • Powermeter. Powermeter. Powermeter. Powermeter.
  • The sooner you can your hands on a PM and start the learning curve, the better.
  • You're on the right path with option #1 - Powermeter.

The only significant advantage I find the Computrainer has over using a powermeter with an indoor trainer is that you don't have to have the mental strength to keep the watts where they need to be, just the will to continue. Given that we all need that mental strength come race day, that's not all bad. And you can take the powermeter with you on the road and to the races.

    Merry Christmas!
  • As everyone has said, powermeter. It will help you in training and racing.

  • Okay...so, I DID get a new bike, but, instead of a P2 my bride bought me a P3! I am pumped. So, I am going to order a Power Tap and will finally start training with power! Thank goodness!

Question - what do you guys think I can fairly sell my 2009 P1 for?

It has no noticeable scratches, and has no upgrades on it. I bought it for $1650 originally.
  • A good gauge is to go on ebay and start looking at closed sales and see what other similar bikes were going for. I'm sure you'll see a few similar items. Hint: under search click on "Advanced Options" and select "Completed Listings" to see items that have been sold (or not). Bike sales are so subjective. The rule of thumb that I have heard is that within 1-2 years 50% is doing pretty well. 2-4 25%. After that... get what you can. Good luck.
  • I think you can do a little better than Tom's rule of thumb for Cervelos. But he's right...look at ebay completed sales.

Another thing you can do is look on craigslist (go to google, click advanced search, restrict the search to craigslist.org, then pick a date range). But that will only tell you what people were asking...not what they got.

  • Sweet! Congrats on the new P3! Definitely get a Powertap with the proceeds from your P1. That way you can train AND race with power.

A 2006 ultegra P1 recently sold for $650 and a 2010 ultegra P1 recently sold for $1,150... I'd guess yours will be $850-1,050. Good luck.
