New running shoes

I have for years used the Nike Air Zoom Elite shoes for running, but they have been discontinued.

I have tried a number of different shoes to find a suitable replacement, but I ahve yet to find one that I'm completely happy with

I have used:

Nike Pegasus

Nike LunarGlide

K-Swiss K-ona

Newton Stability

Mizuno Wave Eliksir

Any suggestions to a better replacement for the 'good old shoes'?

  • have you tried/looked at Zoot trainers?

  • Not sure what kind of shoes you prefer (cushioned, minimalist, etc.), but I have tried a bunch of shoes and love my Saucony Kinvaras. They are light and are relatively minimalist, but have pretty good forefoot cushioning. Plus they are pretty reasonable on the price side.
  • I am enjoying 2 different shoes right now. The K-Swiss Blade Light (run) and the Nike LunarElite+.

  • A few thoughts. Your Nike Air Zoom Elites were a lightweight performance stability shoe, which is the same category i run in. Nikes have a toe box that leaves my foot a bit cramped, so fit may not be the easiest thing to translate, but I've also run in the Wave Elixirs, and while I like them, I can see where someone who likes a cushioned feel wouldn't. Some shoes to consider would include

Asics DS Trainer - this would be my first guess at what you might like
Zoot ultra Tempo+ - firmer ride, somewhat like the Mizunos, but a more tri-specific shoe
New Balance 905- I'll be trying these next, but may be wide for your foot
K-Swiss K-ruuz - my current go-to flat for treadmill and shorter racing. Love these shoes.

    Good luck!
  • I don't have much to add except I now pay a great deal of attention to the weight of my shoes. Some of these shoes are pretty danged heavy and I can feel the difference. I have also moved to the Saucony Kinvaras, primarily because of the massive weight difference between these shoes and others I have worn.
  • Bo,
It seems you like a lightweight stability shoe. I think you might like the Saucony Fastwitch shoes. The Fastwitch 5 is set to debut next month. If you want a great neutral lightweight shoe then I'd suggest the Brooks Launch - best shoe I've ever used.
  • Here are the Zoot Stability Shoes if you are interested. I perfer neutral shoes but they also have me test out the stability line from time to time so I have run in all of the shoes listed below if you have questions on a specific shoe.

The Kapalini or the Advantage will be the closest to the traditional lightweight stability, but I would recomend the Tempo 3.0 instead as I just like it more.

Run Line (normal laces and have ~12mm heel toe drop) - will be the same until Nov 2011
Ultra Kane - ~ 11 oz, very comfortable upper
Kapalini - ~10.5 oz, more like your tradition normal nike/new balance/etc shoe, but has sockless liner and no tongue

    Hybrid
Advantage 2.0 - 9.9 oz, upper is like the tri line (tempo, race, etc) but has normal laces. - When I feel like running in a cushioned shoe I run in the Energy which is the same shoe in neutral. The advantage/energy 3.0 come out in March 2011, with minimal changes

Tri (quick elastic laces and have ~10mm heel toe drop):
Ultra Tempo 3.0 - 9.0 oz and has all the tri features. The tempo 4/tt 4 come out in March 2011 with changes to the laces and new colors but the sole and upper are the same
All of the current race shoes (Race, Speed, etc) are netural, but they have a new race specific tri shoe coming out in March 2011 that is a light weight stability shoe. I can't remember the name but is is like a Ovua or something like that.
  • I've used a couple of the Zoot shoes (in the tri line, not the run line). I bought the TT (version 2, I think) as an experiment in trying a less structured and race shoe, and grew to love it quickly. I know that this is not especially helpful because I can't compare it to the other shoes, but I just wanted to endorse that shoe (including over the "energy", which I also experimented with) from someone who had been running in more structured shoes and is now running completely in minimalist ones. I dig the funky "tri laces" and how easy they are to put on. Great for shorter races where transitions really matter. I also ran an open marathon and an IM marathon in the TTs.
