Running shoes that are good in the snow?

Last year we had a pretty mild winter here in Cincinnati, but if the past 2 weeks are any indication of things to come, then my normal running shoes aren't going to cut it this winter. I was plowing through 5 inches of fresh powder last night and slipping and sliding all over the place in the process.

So...has anyone had good luck in the snow (as good as can be reasonably expected anyway) with any particular running shoe? I run on a paved trail that doesn't get plowed and is mostly heavily wooded so this snow is in the shade and will probably be sticking around for awhile.

  • We get a great deal of snow up in my neck of the woods.  I run with my normal running shoes and just strap on the YakTraks when the roads are covered in snow.  Whether the snow is loose or packed, the YakTraks work great.  I have managed to hit all my intervals in a variety of snowy conditions so far this winter.

  • My aunt in Colorado swears by the YakTraks too. In fact, she doesn't go running in the winter without them.
  • Yaktraks. Love mine. There are also a number of peeps who are into making a pair of screw shoes.
  • I use screw shoes for ice or frost and switch to Yaks when the ground is packed snow. When it's too snowy out, we just go cross country skiing.
  •  I have briefly tested Mizuno Cabrakan 2 in some light snow. Had pretty good traction. Will need more running in snow to give you a better account. Their advantage is water resistant upper. They do have a decent outsole for snow conditions.

  • Thanks for all the replies.

A guy that I work with is an ultrarunner and he suggested Salomon Speedcross 2 GTX. I checked out their reviews on various sites, they're waterproof, have a Gortex shell, and they rate very highly in deep snow traction according to all the reviews. I think I might give them a try.
