Nagging Calf Pain

I've been having recurring calf pain during my runs lately.  Here's my history:  I completed IMFL in November, took a week and a half completely off, ran easy for two weeks, then right into pretty intense marathon training.  The second week of that during my 14 mile long run my left calf started having dull pain that would reach a level of pain and then stay there through my workout.  Never very intense pain, but it came back the next few workouts.  Took a week off running completely, then this Monday did an easy run and it came back around 4 miles.

I don't have any pain when I'm not running, even right after my workout, and biking is completely pain-free.  I'm thinking I jumped into marathon training a bit too fast after Ironman.

My best guess is that's it's just an inflammation and I'm planning on standing down for 10 days so I can start OS in January.  I'm also planning on getting a massage between now and then so hopefully they can work it out.

Any thoughts or suggestions?  This is my first semi-injury in over 6 years so I'm hoping someone can give me some input on my plan.

Thanks!

Marc

  • Could just be a combination of all the above, but the bottom line is you've got a calf strain that's now turned the corner from acute to chronic injury. Time to get that dug out by some pro's. have any ART/Graston peeps in your area?? image

The great news is that it's isolated to running. Stretch, foam roll and ice everyday, regardless of whether it hurts until it's completely gone. that and some soft tissue work/massage should clear it up quick.
  • And if it helps you any Marc, I'm right there with you :-(
