RICE protocol while at a standing work station
I have another calf strain, blah blah bla, whatever, you've heard it all before. I know what to do, RICE, Roll, Dig.
But as you guys know, I've now adopted a standing work station. So I now stand all day at my PC (best move I've made- my hips and back love me for this). I'm trying to figure out if I should abandon my standing station while I'm doing the RICE thing on my calf. I don't have any pain while standing, but obviously the R and E part of RICE are not really happening.

If your ankle and/or calf are swollen, I would:
1. wear compression socks
2. try to sit and elevate that leg for at least a few hours a day
3. +/- on the ice.
A fresh strain is going to have alot of edema. Standing (even if you are moving around) is going to increase that edema even with compression socks on. I say abandon the standing thing until the acute phase of this strain is over (as in the swelling subsides).
On the "bright" side, this gives me a little more information for finalizing my standing station design before I have Joe build the final product. I'm still using milk crates as I wanted to work out some kinks before he does the final build. I guess this is one of those kinks I need to consider.
The ladies have got ya covered. The only thing I would add is that if there isn't much swelling (and there may not be as the ankle/calf heal) then you have a little more wiggle room. You can alternate hours sitting and standing. another helpful solution if you have to be up and on your feet, is to wear a shoe with a little bit of a heel on it. This will keep the calf from staying in that stretched out position. Keep it small heel wise, a little goes a long way.
Keep us posted!! I thought we'd agree? no more cranky calf??
Yeah, that's what I thought too! :-) Thanks! THere's no swelling right now, but it is tender. With the long weekend for the holiday, I should have lots of time to do my RICE & ROLL protocol.
