TACX

Breaking in the new trainer TACX I -Magic - did my OS workout last night on it 3x8 @ 95% - 100%. I did the workout based on HR due to the fact that I did not have a PM when I started the OS. Is it normal for the watts to fluctuate during a workout> What I means is on a road with a 1% grade my watts are 125 @ 85 RPM and 19 mph? Then the grade will change to say 5% - obviously watts will go up - to around 225. My question is - am I a pathetic biker with 125 watts on 0% grade?

  • Bill, the answer is nobody here is going to call you a pathetic biker, regardless of any set of numbers you post.

As far as differences between hills and flats, it's not uncommon at all for someone who hasn't ridden with a PM. Over time, you'll learn that you can push harder on those flats, and that you can't actually push as hard as you think on those hills. Keep paying attention, and good luck!
  • Mike,

Thanks for the reply!! I was being a bit sarcastic with my pathetic comment.

This type of training is new to me, power and pace. I was just shocked at how low my watts were. I always assumed because I can average 18 mph on a 5-6 hr ride that I was "working" hard.

    Happy New Year.

  • Bill, are you using the PM on the TACX or did you get one for your bike that you are using both on the road and on the trainer? If the former, I"d wonder how accurate the PM on the TACX is. You may not be so pathetic!
  • Bill - one of the things i have learned, having introduced several friends to EN style triaining, is that most people really don't workout very hard when training for triathlon. Most people train long, and they do get tired, but it is not usually because they worked that hard...just like you can get exhausted standing at the DMV waiting to get your drivers license renewed, even though it isn't hard work.

I am betting you will see a big jump in those watts just by virtue of the fact that you are paying attention to them now...and, welcome to EN! As Tony says in P90x, you'll hate it, but you'll love it!

I am using the PM on the TACX - I can only swing one new toy at a time by my wife..LOL!  I will more than likely purchase a PM for the bike at some point. I have to decide whether or not I am going to keep my 5 yr old QR KILO or buy a new bike. If I do purchase the new bike a PM will have to wait.......decisions, decisions.

  • If the QR kilo fits you properly, you'll get a lot faster with the purchase of a PM than you will a new bike.....just sayin'
  • Keith,

    You are probably right!!

I see you are from Milton - does the EN team have a group from Boston for training rides and what not?
