Need to buy a new Built in Dishwasher - recco's?

so our dishwasher bit the dust finally ( 3 repairs of 200 bucks each, so we decided the next one was it) - we've been waiting for Boxing Day sales - and here we are. Our old dishwasher was a Maytag MBD6650 Jet Clean - we liked it, esp the racks folding down on the bottom and the cup shelf on the top. We never used the heat dry, to save energy. So the option to turn it off is great. All these features I would like to keep.

would like to keep it under $500 CAD and need to have delay start (we have variable electricity billing so we try and run the machine in the lowest rate period).

any suggestions from the team?

  • We've had pretty good luck with Maytag products.. While I don't have product specific recommendation, we tend to buy appliances at Sears Outlet store. You can pickup last year's model pretty cheap. It it roughly 1/3 off. Some models are pretty damage--other have a minor scratch.

Our latest dishwasher does have a delay feature--which sounds like it would with your energy plan.

  • We used Consumer Reports to narrow our choices. A key issue for us was the noise factor since we have an open floorplan. We ended up with a Whirlpool because our first pic (a Boesch) had tines too close together and our stoneware wouldn't fit. We're happy- a few things I'd redesign, but it works well and it is REALLY quiet. Highly recommend you do some research on Consumer Reports first, then go to a store to see them in person to be sure the model will work for your dishes.

We bought it at Sears as well- back when the recovery rebate dealio was going on.
  • thanks guys for the recommendations - we ended up getting a Kenmore (made by Amana, who also make Kitchen Aid - I am convinced there is one big appliance manufacturer - and a trillion brands - same goes for mattresses!) - with all the features we wanted (delay start, fold down tines, cup tray, stainless steel interior). I would have loved a boesch, but out of our snack bracket (and hard to get parts in canada - part of the challenge in living in a country with the population of California).

However, they had great deals and we also got a fridge! Funny how your idea of christmas presents changes after, oh, 35.

    Cheers
