JOS Pain Caves (or Power Penthouses)

Dave had a great recommendation in the "Pre-JOS" thread to post pics of where we'll be doing our training during this OS so we can all get a better visual of where folks are doing their first 2x20's.  So I thought I'd start a thread.

I'll post my pics later tonight.  Gotta scoot, but I wanted to get the thread started.

Let's see where you all are pumping out the watts this winter!

I'm back hard at work up there.

Oh that's funny........and a little scary too!  WOW!

That pic is outside my  office/pain cave, and that's Lilly with me.

  •  Nice EN Tech Guy!  And thanks for getting our "Attachments" option at the bottom back so we can post our pics!

Now that we have that fixed, here's what the inside of my PainCave looks like:

And here's what the view from the saddle looks like

  •  I don't have a permanent cave.  I pull a car out and set-up.  Then put things away when done.

Here is a vid from my cave last January.  Ya, I am a dork, I know.  Would love to see more vids in EN.  makes it more fun IMHO.

  • @ John,

What an absolute hoot! Your video was AWESOME! My cave is the same, pull out a car..........close the garage door and turn on the boom box and hope I don't wake my family up early AM. I got an Ipad for christmas...................will need to get one of those watches to hook up to my spare stero......what an awesome idea!  What is the watch? Cheers, Greg

  • Welcome to my pain cave!  I have made a few adjustments from last year.  I'm no longer worried about throwing in a movie for long rides, but I like the computer close by because it has all the EN podasts and they make for good listening material as well as some good music.

My bicycle... Still covered in towels to keep the sweat at bay.

My "Nused" treadmill.  This is a great addition.  I like to jump off the bike and get some strides in after a hard ride to shake the legs out.  You will also see in the picture my nice new fan.  A definite step up from last year's model:

Here is my computer and my wall of shame.  I was hoping for a better combo shot.  On one screen is WKO+.  On the other I was trying to get @John Stark's musical debut.

My favorite piece of my Pain Cave is my Planning Board.  My daughter likes to add her $.02 every now and then...

The Iron Gym is still there, but the garbage can is still at little ways away.  Hopefully that isn't an issue.

    JOS--BRING IT!

  • few folks know that I can control John Stark from my watch. image
  • Now that the tech is working again, here's my Power Penthouse - a covered second story deck, for fresh air without the rain. Note the sun on Dec 24 (2009); it's again sunny today and will be thru NYD. Note the lounge chair for collapsing into. Also, the woods behind me reflected in the open door; some random music video playing in the TV - a U2 concert, I think. Jack Bauer and "24", which I never watched the first time thru, is also a fav (via netflix on an old computer to the TV); the iPad connects music wirelessly too, if I want. And, peeking around the front of my still hospitalized TT bike is the MacBook running Parallels for the CompuTrainer in CS mode with pre-programmed workoout file. Whew! what would I do without silicon chips, radio waves, and electricity? I love the second decade of the 21st Century! I remember when a hand-held AM transistor radio was a Big Deal. And probably cost about as much (accounting for inflation) as an iPad.

  • Had a great run today, 45min. at moderate pace on the treadmill.  It's been snowing all day and due to the warm temps of late, the sidewalks/streets have turned into a skating rink (snow melt and freeze) and I didn't want to risk slipping, hence the treadmill workout.  Considering a ride later this afternoon, however, I have a feeling I'll get a good weight workout in later today as we are expecting up to 10" of snow by this evening (I foresee a lot of shoveling/snowblowing in my future ).

Here is a pic of my cave...

Have prior results posted around the room and below the TV (when in aero), large fan, TV (sound and video sources all controlled via TV linked to home network), bathroom next door and bar just down the hall (for all my fluid needs ).

Happy New Year to all, and I look forward to seeing you in the JOS on Monday.

    Aaron

  • @ Aaron, that is one sweet set up. Where are the pics of the bar? Isnt that most important?????? Cheers, Greg

    @ John,

What an absolute hoot! Your video was AWESOME! My cave is the same, pull out a car..........close the garage door and turn on the boom box and hope I don't wake my family up early AM. Greg:  it is a Timex iControl watch:

    http://www.timex.com/IRONMAN-Sleek-...B000VVYY5K

Can control the iPod from my watch with volume up/down and songs skip forward/back.  Great when running cuz you can simply stick the iPod in a baggie and put it in a pocket, etc. and not have to touch it again.

    Great for the cave music.

  • OK - here's me clowning in the pain cave last night.  I have a 500 sq ft lanai/sun room and the bike is on a black rubber matt in the lanai portion...right under a ceiling fan.

The frau let's me do occassional bike maintenance in here!  The one behind me with the pink wrap is hers.   No dreadmill on the premises...can't justify one in South Florida.   In fact, the pain cave is only necessary because 1) it's dark at night, and 2) I'm wimpy about riding in cold weather which is just about anything below 60 (although I've been out in the 30's a few times).

I mostly do Spinervals so here's what's on the tube when I'm working.

  • Nice pain caves all! Mine is just a corner of my garage, after I move a car to make room for the bike/drainer! Nemo, have to say I LOVE your view from the bike! How beautiful is that?! Some very sweet caves! Dang, I've gotta figure out a better set up!! image
  • Wow Paul- That pain cave looks beautiful.
We are getting a TM in 1 week!!! Yippee!! Between that and the CT, the whole place is being rearranged. I will post pics when it is done. I want to show off my new AbCoaster (HAHAHA) See what watching infomercials gets you.....
  • OK; since it was my suggestion for the pain cave pics, one would think it would not have taken so long to participate...........here ya go......

Since the butt-heads at YouTube wouldn't allow viewing on video because of the song   , I've had to be creative to allow viewing...

    BTW...WTF is UMG?

    http://gallery.me.com/davambrose/100147

    Hope that works......

  •  sweet ambrose

umg = uhhhhhh; my god  - jk don't know either, might be interested in knowing myself

Pain cave pics - poor quality, taken with cell phone, but to give everybody the idea of where I'll be hanging: It's what used to be my living room.since yours truly is not as lucky to be livning in a house, my chicago condo was transformed into a pain cave - what a great sight it was when Megan walked in the door, not knowing what transformation my place had undergone

You could notice the pivotal set-up of the bike in the MIDDLE of everything, even my life.

You'll see this is the view from where I'll be commanding the pedals. Mini Mac set up, linked to plasma screen (never used for TV) IM wisconsin booklet by the mac, and the medal is on the mac, within sight at all times.

Mac is hooked to surround system, so iTunes is easily accessible with remote

On the side, and already plugged into the computer is Kill Bill - anytime I need some anger, I just plug in for some tarantino style humor.

Any other suggestions are welcome and appreciated

Also, I will be creating a place on yelp called the pain cave, I can check into it every time I'm there

  • OMG you guys with the videos are just killin' me!  LIterally almost peed my pantz!  Hmmmm... maybe the solution to not being able to pee on the bike (TMI, I know) is just channel John rockin' out in his garage....   Wonder what John's neighbors think!?!

Great job and beautiful pain caves everyone!

  • @ David A, nice pain cave and video..........where and how did you get the EN decals on your bike? Very cool, would like some. Cheers, Greg

  • Even though I'm not playing until after Disney, I was inspired to set up the pain cave. Changing a tire will really chip the h*ll out of a manicure. But so excited, for the first time I have a triathlon closet. A whole triathlon closet! I no longer care I have to walk down four flights of stairs and use quarters to do laundry.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E7A1aocWoOE

  • @ Beth: Super cute video! Dig the closet… that’s really movin’ up! And your mani looks maaahvelous, BTW.
  • Nice, I just got to watch those videos. and pretty hilarious!!!!
  • @ Beth, way cool! Love the closet! I really need to step up my game and change my pain cave.........a.k.a. Garage!

  • Hay JOS!

Late to the party and not techie enough to do a video but hope this gives y'all an idea of where all the sweat will land.  I've thoroughly enjoyed all the caves shared thus far.  Keep 'em coming!

The Edwards’ Pain Cave. One of the (many!) benefits of not having kids is we have an entire bedroom to utilize...

My view from the saddle. DH just moved the TV down so no more crooks in the neck. Many debits from the SAU account for this as he just LOVES patching drywall.

Schwag from the peeps at IMC 2010. My #1 goal for 2011 is to give back as so many gave to me in 2010.

Map to continually remind myself there are TWO mountain passes at IMC.      And a little cowbell to ring during the FTP tests, just in case.

Yes, my hockey self inspires my triathlon self. Ya wanna make somethin’ of it???

More cowbell JOS!  Let's get 'r' dun!

  • Love the cowbell, Jenn! And no children definitely do equal bigger pain caves! (I so don't want that phrase on a T-shirt.)

  • @ Jenn - Love the hockey picture. I remember exactly where I was at the moment that picture was taken: in a hotel room with a room full of hockey players and hockey dads jumping up and down for 10 minutes straight. One of the greatest underdog wins of all time.
  • Hey, I never thought about using a cow bell. I typically yell for my wife (God, I owe her big) to bring me a drink when I run out. I wonder if she'll slug me if I ring a cow bell instead?
