2011 season

Having recently joined the house, I'm still just trying to find my way around...

I have found the season planning tool, and have entered my data in there... There are 4 1/2 IM's I'm considering as preps for my 2 IM's next year...but I'm undecided on which ones to go for... Any suggestions?

Also, I'm not sure about exxactly what is in the General Prep fase....considering that I have a family holiday planned in this period (where I expect no structured training) ..would it make sense to move things a bit, so this falls in the transition?

Comments and ideas appreciated.

  • I Roth is your A race, I'd stick with one HIM in the twelve weeks before that, preferably earlier rather than later. The time I did an HIM 3 weeks before an IM, I ending up buggering the big race (and it was the REALLY big one, the one in October.) You sound like you love to race, meaning, you will RACE those HIMs, which means you'll go at a much harder pace than the race sim calls for. Those two race sims before the IM, IMHO are the most important workouts we have in those twelve weeks. It's when you get to put the finishing touches on finding your race-day paces in bike and run. Which is key to race-day success, knowing just what power and pace to execute at. Roth is a PR course, I wouldn't want to waste that opportunity by going in a little too tired.

  • So, basically I should just do the one 1/2 IM in Week 24 and forget about the rest?
  • Totally agree with what Al has said. That said, no reason you need to toss that first HIM in week 14 out the window, so long as you go into it knowing it's not going to be an "A" race kinda situation. I've done a HIM at the end of the OS for fun- it's not ideal but it is possible. The down side to doing it is that you are going to cut your OS short in order to accommodate it (you'll have to drop out of the OS at the end of week 13, taper wk 14, race, and then recover wk 15). You've gotta decide if that race is worth giving up some of that "get fast" time in the OS.

The General Prep stuff is basic maintenance kinda training schedule. If you decide to keep that HIM in week, I'd recommend you get back into the OS schedule as quickly as possible after you recover, then move your "transition" to the Holiday week.

If you ditch the HIM in week 14, just stay in the OS right up to your holiday. Take the transition period while you enjoy time with your family.

In either case, When you return from holiday, hope into General Prep for whatever time there is between then and the start of the 12 week plan
  • @Bo, I suggest that you do the half on either week 24 or 26, but not both and not the early or late one. I would also look for an early season half marathon. Depending on your conditions after the OS transition, you could do a bike or run focused block of training, and slowly begin to get your swim technique back!
  • @coach P: when would be the best time for the 1/2 marathon?
  • Bo, I'd be interested to know which 1/2's you were looking at given that we're nearby each other. Too bad Challenge Aarhus is the week before Roth!
  • @ Adam, I'm actually considering either Mallorca or Pölten (Austria)...

But a good local one is Jels (southern Jutland)..but that is three weeks before Roth..or Silkeborg in August

Which races are you planning to do?
  • Bo, I would look at anything in the last 2-3 weeks of the OS up until your holiday....ideally at the end of the OS.

  • Thanks, Patrick
  •  @Bo, I considered doing the 70.3 in Austria last year, but opted to do Challenge Kraichgau (Southern Germany, 1 or 2 weeks later) instead.  It was a great course, big rolling hills in "Germany's Tuscany", and very well-run for the first year.  Take a look at it if you are still considering options.

Not sure what I'm doing this year yet, but will consider Jels.  Challenge Aarhus will be a must-do, and I may do the Olympic distance in Silkeborg (too close to IM WI for the half).
