Swimming in the OS
SHHHHHH!!!! Don't tell RnP!! but I was planning on starting the OS swim hack next week to work on my technique. Which BTW needs a lot of work. Any ways I was wondring how others add swimming to the OS.
What days do y'all swim to get good recovery? I was thinking Monday for a swim and doubling up the bike and swim on Thursday or Saturday or adding to the run on Sunday. Thank for the help and input. Also I though I saw this same question eariler this year but can not find it. Hope all have a great new year with PR's for everyone.

My thought is, if all you're doing is technique work (that's where I'm at, just adapting to the neuro-muscular changes in my arms after my bike accident), then picking the day is more a matter of time available and convenience, cause it probably won't affect your running and/or biking on the same day. Meaning you shouldn't really be putting significant EFFORT into the swim, just an easy focus on what your body is doing.
Say you're already going to the Y or club to do the treadmill, and there's a pool there ... double up to save on the admin time, doing the swim first.
Me, I'll go Sun and Tues or Thurs, casue that's how I earn SAUs - DW swims then.
Been out of the pool since late July or early August, can't even remember anymore. Starting back up next week with masters. Do i need to swim, no. I do need to drop this 10lbs and nothing is faster than adding masters swim practice to get that done.
Twice a week for me starting in Jan
See you there! Which night's are you planning on going?
@Monday and Thursday I think. No ready for the Long course meters on Tuesday nights yet.
Those are the same night's I'm planning also . . . for the same reason.
I know it was not recommended but for me it was needed.
I've been doing the same workouts (OS Intermediate) and hated the 40x50's, but did them. My arms were dead by the end, and my times were a little slower than the 30x50's, but I think it's also from cross county skiing Friday and Sunday. That's a heck of a upper body workout!
I've also been going Monday and Friday. I have seen RnP recommend either Monday/Friday or Monday/Thursday. The Monday/Thursday is if you feel you need a complete day off of all workouts.
I swim because I still want to be competitive at the sprint distance, and a few seconds can mean a lot! When I've taken a large amount of time off before, it's taken way too long for me to get back to where I was.
I have cut back drastically from what I was doing last year. I averaged about 15,000 yards/week swimming M/W/F with a masters swim group. This year I decided to mix it up and try the OS workouts to see if I can still hit my 1,000 meter test results from last year. So far I haven't lost any time, but I have gained back a lot of sleep. For masters I was up at 4:15am, and now I get to sleep until 5:15am. Makes a huge difference on Friday nights.
The all free style swimming is getting old, so I plan on mixing in some stroke work soon.
I admit I get into the pool every week or two to make sure RnP are right about this no OS swimming thing. They are. Every time I get right back in and do the same sets I was doing all last year in the same times, although I haven't done a single set longer than 500.
