Harpoon Brewery to Brewery ride

I was wondering if any of the EN peeps who did the Harpoon Brewery to Brewery ride are doing it again this year? If you did it and don't plan on doing it again this year please contact me . Looking to have you sign up and transfer your entry to a friend of mine.

  •  I'll be doing it again

  • Hopefully its a tad cooler this year

  • The new Registration for this starts this Tuesday and according to the email I received a little while ago, your going to have to come pretty close to your predicted time/speed in order to get a potential slot for the following year. Since I've never done this, it brings up the question of how the groups actually perform. Are the groups good about doing a pace line for most of the ride or does it start that way and quickly become a solo effort? I ask this as a group that stays pace lined will definitely move faster by a significant amount. What's been your experiences???
  •  Keith,

I did it two years ago and started with one group of guys, met a friend halfway thru that started earlier, then we hooked up with a couple of other guys and worked really well together toward the end.

The only year I did it, it was just about riding and having fun.  I think the key is either getting with people you know and will work well with, or picking your speed group and try and find some folks to work with.

  • How long did this ride take you guys and what was your FTP or w/kg at the time. I'm trying to figure out which group to try and put myself in.

    Thanks---Keith
  • Keith, my FTP was about 225 when I did this both years and it took me about 9 hours both time. I rode with the 16mph group. I would say you could easily be in the next higher group.

  • Here is Coach P's advice about the Harpoon Brewery ride this Saturday.

@Keith, 143 miles is legit, and the B2B ride is EPIC. I wouldn't do FTP at all…unless of course you try to hang with your group. So the options are either, try to hang with big boys and do some work with them (pace picks up right outside city limits!!!) until they settle down. OR you can do your own thing from the outset…dial in .68-.7 (your call) and ride IM watts all day and see how much TSS you can earn!

So now the question is which one to choose. It seems to me that if I hang with a group that I should switch over to the road bike (which I haven't ridden since last October), where if I do the IM watts all day, then I can stay on the tri bike. What would you do road or tri??? and Why?

    Thanks-Keith
  • I did this ride 3 times- 2 of them were the longer 150 mile rides. I think the construction in Keene is over so the distance is back to 143. Those were 3 long days in the saddle! But what made the rides fun enough to go back for more was meeting folks to ride along with and share the work. I don't think I would enjoy a 143 mile solo ride and I don't want to ride in a paceline with you if you're on your aero bars if I don't know you. So for me, the answer is easy. It's a road bike event.

Have fun! I'd probably be there this year but it would really screw up my CdA taper week!
  • FYI, tri bike isn't a disqualifier for a group ride. If you're not at the front, well off to the side, or off the back, then just ride in the hoods. For me, the fun in rides like this is to get together my own small group, or form one on the road, and just do a massive amount of work shared among 4-6 guys that work well together.
