2011 Goals Thread

It's 4 days into the New Year and I haven't seen a 2011 Goals thread.

I find that writing down goals and sharing them is one of the best ways for me to be accountable, so here are mine.

What about everyone else?  Feel free to share goals, new years resolutions, anything you want to be accoutable to.

1. Run well off the bike (IM run IF of at least .78)
2. Taper well and peak at the right times (PR in races not training)
3. Follow my plan and do not overachieve in training
4. Continue to improve my swim (T pace of 1:30/100M)
5. Qualify for a USAT Elite Card (Top 3 OA in EQR or 8% in 3 races)

6. Qualify for Kona

The numbers:
Body Comp: OS 140, Training 138, Racing 135
Swim: 1000 M TT in 15:00 (1:30/100M 1:22 Y)
Bike: FTP 306 or 5.0 w/kg which ever comes first
Run: VDOT 64

  •  My 2011 goals are:

    • Improve confidence in the water.
    • Improve my ability to ride more evenly over varied terrain.
    • Be more consistent with my training (miss less than 3% of my training sessions)
    • Continue to improve body comp and weight (between 155 - 160 lbs)
    • Successfully complete first triathlon and Ironman
    • Increase FTP to 250, VDOT to 52
    • Meet (in person) at least 20 EN Members
    • Conquer the Devil's Kitchen at the Tour of the Catskills
    • Have fun and a less stressful year!

  • I want to break my IM Marathon PR of 3:57. I've run faster in each one so far. I will work towards a sub 3:50 goal.
  • I've actually been trying to let go of some goals recently and now you post this.

My main goals are to stay healthy, get as fit as I can for IMWI and then execute well on race day. Let the results fall where they may. That being said, I want to toe the line with a 4.3 W/kg and a 57 VDOT. I also want to equal or better my swim of 1:06 from 2008.

  • 1. Finish my first Ironman (everything else this year basically revolves around this goal)
    2. FTP:270 | vDot:54 | 1:45/100m
    3. Plan, test, and execute my race strategy perfectly
    4. Avoid burnout
    5. Really enjoy my fitness and use it to share experiences with my family and friends and don't become a training hermit
  • 1) improve body comp/weight - getting to race weight in advance of IMWI

    2) meet coaches expectations (once I fill out the heads we win stuff - since I'm new to power I need help with setting a realistic FTP goal)

    3) find a better balance between  life and training/racing... not continue down the path of an uptight, one-dimensional kool-aid drinker

As far as long term goals go (may be a few more seasons for me):  (1) qualify for HIM championship (I've only said that out loud to one other person); (2) quailify for the Boston marathon -- both of those will take a lot of work!

  • 1. Learn how to really race. How to start every one of them belly to the bar and putting on best on the line.
    2. Hit the OS like a Newbie. Work hard. Maybe learn to channel all you boys and find out what you are talking about when you speak of "crushing yourselves" and "crushing each other."
    3. Get over power meter trepidation. Become the girl who posts her workout digits.
    4. Learn how to swim properly. There's a pink speedo/pink bikini bet on the line over my Timberman swim time.
    5. Sub 6:15 (or better!) at Timberman, including a sub two-hour run split.
  • Thanks Matt for starting this.

Personal goals: 1. Save for a new kitchen in 2012!!

                                   2. Not agree to be ROOM MOM next school year.Brutal job, and other parents are lame.

                                   3. Find a new church

Racing Goals:   1. Race well at Boston. Hoping for sub 3:15. Dare I say close to 3:10

                                  2. Vineman 70.3 with a time of 5:0X.  That would rock. My PR is 5:12. AND Qualify for 70.3 World Champ.

Career Goals:  Be a stay at home Mom. Unfortunately it does not go along with personal goal #1. Darn. Maybe in a few years.

  • I want to finish within an hour of Sulli! :-)

Great thread. I'll come up with a more serious answer shortly.

I want to finish within an hour of Sulli! :-)

It's I who want to finish within an hour of you!

  • No real resolutions this year other than break 12 hours at IMAZ this year no matter how I get there.  Everything else is just rolling over as I have a good balance in my life with family, community and sport.

But just to post what I will continue doing:

    • Continue giving back by continuing to be a leader in Cub Scouts (elementary school boys rule!  So much fun!  Sponges for learning new things), volunteer at Special Olympics with son, and get involved with wife and son at local food kitchen or the like.
    • What Carrie said:  "Not agree to be ROOM MOM next school year.Brutal job, and other parents are lame."  Though I am not a room mom, I volunteer in class and with PTA and Foundation.  Some parents can be really lame.  But many rock!  I have learned to say NO this year.
    • Continue to work on body comp.
    • Keep IM/training fun. If I am not having fun, walk away and regroup until it becomes fun again.

    Happy New Year everyone.

  • I only have a few goals...

    Have fun
Break 5:30 at Vineman 70.3 (even though I am in the last wave at like 8:30)
Increase my FTP to around 250 (225 entering NOV OS)
    Run a sub 20 min 5k
Take a few weeks off here and there to avoid burnout!
Meet a lot of EN people before Vineman 70.3 -Sounds like a buch of us are doing it this year! yeah!

  • Hoo-boy, this year is a mystery to me as to what's possible. The last 3+ months have been a daily grind to improve what I can in my body and learn to live with what may not improve. But here goes anyway:

    1. Weight training: 3x/week on my arms at home to make them as strong as they can possibly be given the loss of innervation to random muscles. 2x per week for my legs and upper body (30 minutes in the gym) to help maintain my muscle mass.

    2. Weight: eat as many calories a day with as much variety as possible given my limitations in chewing and swallowing, to keep my weight as close to 145 as I can (141.4 today, and dropping since my recent jaw surgery).

    3. OS: Start every workout, every one, and finish each main set, except when I'm in CO skiing Feb 3-15.

    4. Swimming: learn how to go as fast as I can with my new propulsion system; if I lose 10 minutes (I hope its not more than that) in an IM swim, I'll need to work that much harder on improving my bike to make it up on the bike/run.

    5. Finish IM CDA. Finish IM CDA. Finish IM CDA. If I can do that, I'll consider the year a victory, and I can start a new round of goals, given what I find I'm capable of on race day.

  • Here goes mine:
    Major improvement in body comp
Become faster in the swim (i.e. drop 30-40 sec. per 100 meters)
    Improve my bike climbing abilities
FINISH IMLOU this year!! (No biking in swim goggles for me this year!) Thus, becoming an IRONMAN!!
Support my Endurance Nation team-mates, and help my friends who want me to introduce them to the fantastic sport of triathlon!!
  • Last year was a breakthrough year for me.  I ran my best marathon by a lot at Boston (pre-EN, but using a pace-based training plan) and had my best HIM by a lot at Steelhead (using the HIM plan).  In reality, the conditions at Steelhead were very nice (after the start....) and the course isn't very hard (reducing the absolute time), but even so, I placed way better than I ever have and got my highest .

I know it sounds funny, but I was always the "smart kid" at school who was the "participant" at athletics.  [I will never forget the time I was introduced with the official position of "substitute" in basketball...] So my self-confidence at physical things is always a bit shaky.  Perhaps that's one reason I've taken it on with more ardor in recent years.  But it IS fun to be in your 40s and doing your best times at everything still.

So my goal this year is to show myself that last year wasn't a fluke, i.e., that I now "belong" in the class of finishers I found myself running with last year.  I am realistic enough to know that even if so, I am a notch below those shooting for Kona/Henderson, but I want to prepare as if I were of that class and let the chips fall where they may.

    Some specifics
    • i would like to at least hang on to my swim time from Steelhead (34).  Ambitious goal: sub 70 at WI
    • Ambitious bike goal: 4.0 W/kg.  Let the times figure themselves out.
    • Run: PR at KS 70.3 for run split.  Even by 1 second is ok.  That's somewhere in the 1:37 region.  (Don't remember exactly).  Ambitious goal [since I have not yet done it] Run the WI IM split as I should be capable of, e.g, somewhere in the 3:45 region.
    • I like to think it's realistic to go under 5:00 at KS, even though it's a tougher course than Steelhead, where I did 4:48.  And dammit I want to finish the IM with something that starts with a 10...but i know that means I have to stick with the plan hard and execute very well.  But if I do, I think it's possible.
  • Great thread. My tri-specific goals for this year are fairly simple:

    - Focus on continuous improvement across as many dimensions as I sanely can
    - Show-up to IMCDA lighter, faster & stronger than last year
    - Have better bike set-up/position, nutrition/hydration plan and overall race plan and execute it.
    - Buy a beer (or drink of his choice) for Al after he finishes IMCDA one more time

  • Great thread!

    2011 Goals:

    1. Have a year of consistent training with EN. I usually jump from plan to plan, blow off workouts, ramp up volumes....etc.
    2. Bring weight down to 163 lbs.  This was my weight at IMLP '08. I'm stuck at 179 now.
    3. Run well off the bike, breaking 2 hours for the run at Calgary 70.3.
    4. Break my 70.3 PB of 6:09:09 at Calgary 70.3 even though it is a 94k bike.

That's my story, and I'm sticking with it!

    Best wishes,

    Elly

  • OK, here's my go at this:

    1. My mantra is and always will be, "have fun no matter what you do!" I try and live by it and althought it's been difficult at times, it really works.
    2. Body Comp, Body Comp, Body Comp! I finished IMAZ in Nov at 229lbs. I crossed the finish line and after hugging the wife, I told her I can go faster.
    leaner+lighter=fater, right?
    3. I like to learn to ride more consistant on my bike. I feel like I ride in surges.

I'll continue to give back through sport as I have done the past few years. Its a good way to "give back" and it keeps me accountable to others besides me. Happy New Year every one!
  •

My Goals for 2011 are quite simple:

    • Remember to make the most of every day and enjoy living – because today is all I have
    • Train smart: avoid preventable injuries resulting from the fatigue of overtraining
    • Not hear my friend say “It must suck to be you.” (His ubiquitous response to any whining)
    • Complete every race or event I enter – with a big smile

Esse quam videri ~ To be, rather than to seem

  • Great thread - I will have to keep coming back to it for accountability purposes.

Goals for 2011 and moving forward:

    1. To give my undivided attention to the task immediately before me (whether it relates to family/patients/teaching/friends/training/eating). I think I have ADD;
    2. To complete and work throughout the full duration of scheduled workouts, and not just get through the Main Set;
    3. To be more vigilant of what I eat and work on Body comp;
    4. To encourage fitness pursuits amongst the people I interact with;
    5. To remain injury-free
    6. To race IMWI intelligently, and within my capabilities, without time goals per se, but knowing that the full season of EN training will push me to kick butt.
  • My athletic goals for 2011:

-sub 5:30 at my mid-season 70.3 (will probably be Kansas)

-sub 1:45 half marathon. I FINALLY broke my 2006 half marathon PR this last December, with a 1:52 (incl a 6 minute porta potty stop). Dang that PR stood seemingly forever!!!

-IMAZ in the low 12:## range.

-body comp to mid-190s with sub-10% BF

Personal goals (I know these aren't S.M.A.R.T. goals, but oh well):

-Find a new job or position, one that challenges me intellectually, while not inhibiting my ability to reach my athletic goals

-establish and maintain a worthwhile personal relationship

-pay off as much debt as possible

    Reach goals:

    -Move back to West coast

  • Great timing Matt, thinking about this a lot lately (IE playing with data at analticcycling.com)

    The Data Goals:

280 FTP by Imoo (260 now)

Power to Weight for Imoo: 4.3 watts per kilo

    Body comp: 142 lb

Vdot of 56 at the 5K distance

    The Time Goals:

    Sub 18 at 5K (18:56 current PR)

Sub 1:30 Half Marathon at March Madness

4:35 at Door County in July

    10:35 at Ironman Wisconsin

Win Pleasant Prairie Sprint (Won Ag last year, need to go 3min faster)

    Training Goals:

No concussions this year. Keep the rubber side down.

  • @Hayes - I think you forgot one.

Beating Karin out of the water at IMWI.

  • My only really serious triathlon goal is to not have my weight holding me back this race season. Last year I lost about 10 lbs, but didn't quite make it to what I would consider a good race weight. Probably made it to about 21% BF. I really want to get to around 16-18% BF this season. If I can do that I'm sure I'll rock it with some new PRs and other cool stuff. Other than that I just want to have fun (and that's a given!)
  • 2011 Goals:

    • FTP = 215
    • W/kg = 3.8
    • VDOT = 47

    • No major injuries (anything that keeps me from running for more than a week)
    • Not walk any of the run at Kansas 70.3
    • Break 5 hours at Kansas 70.3
    • Complete IMWI "smartly"

    • End the season with the same job (unless I leave by my choice), friends (with a few extra added), and SO (he’s also doing the November OS)
  • I only really have two major goals this year. 1. To get down to a proper BF%/Race Weight and 2. To finish a race without mechanical difficulties (and actually show what all my months of training went for). I think if I can manage these two the rest will fall into place image
  • Love this thread...thanks Matt and thanks for playing everyone else. Let's set a reminder to find this in a few months, eh? image

    Mine are simple:

1 - to get back: as in back to my fitness pre accident. I am almost there but so many doubts remain.
2 - to give back: I am lucky to make a very good living off this sport, and I need to volunteer / do more to help it grow.
3 - to breakthrough: if all goes well, I could have a great year. The Team has been amazing this year and has shown me that I have so much more to achieve...now I just have to remember -- Shiny Side Up! image
  • What a great inspiration!
This year my goal is to get my body weight stable and get faster and stronger.
I want to greatly improve my run, shooting for a sub 22 5k.
I want to finish my HIM sub 5:15 and set myself up for a big 2012 season!
I want do another Adventure Race with my kids.
  • Great Goals Everyone! Just writting them done and getting them out there is a huge step to achieving them.

Just to be clear, this doesn't have to be just triathlon related. Last year my goals were more focused on my family, this year triathlon is a major focus again.

Also, don't limit yourself to 2011 if you have longer term goals your want to put out there go for it. I have one long term goal that I haven't shared yet, sub 153 :-)
  • Time to set up some goals for the year:

    1. Finish my first IM on my feet with a smile on my face
    2. Plan my training week every week so that I have time to hit all the workouts
    3. Stay "in the moment" when training and racing
    4. No caffeine after 6pm (I can't totally give it up...don't have trouble going to sleep...but think my late night Diet Coke makes me believe I don't need to go to bed)

#4 may be the hardest one!
