Who wants to do IM South Carolina 2012

Check out the post on XTRI.  WTC to meet with Columbia officials about possibly bringing Ironman to the city.  It could be a half but with Augusta so close that doesn't make sense.  Maybe they want to compete with Rev 3!   The only one within driving distance from South Florida is Florida.  I'm hoping they go with it in 2012...just not in the summer!!

    They are coming to town on Monday.  Last I heard from was it is probably "a few years" away just from a logistical standpoint.  Lake Murray would be an excellent venue, IMHO.  We shall just have to wait and see.  The summer would be brutal...a spring race would be a really neat time as it still would be wetsuit legal.

    I hope they get it...and sooner than a "few year". A late April race would be great for the SouthEast.

    that would be great for my plans to do an IM in 12.

    IM SC would be very cool...driving distance from VA.

    So many great cities and towns...so few IMs...

    My wife went to SC for 7 years (pharmacy). I did the downtown columbia sprint last year. I'm definitely in. Great city. Lots of good food.

    Yes Lake Murray would be a good spot. There is a lot of good roads around the lake to set up a solid race course. I agree spring would be the smart time of year for an event there. I lived there for 10 years and the summers are at Houston TX temp and humidity levels or worse.

    Clemson boy here...would love to make it back to SC for a race, even if it's in Gamecock country.

    We could lay out a nice course for this. Several of us ENrs live here. Would have to be a spring race. Summer too hot and humid and fall schedule already crowded.

    My mom used to ask me the exact same thing. I did the two closest ones, in AZ and ID, but she never came to those!

    @ Al - so what happened to IMCali ?? Cool shirt though...maybe I should have kept mine for a collection. Too late though, like most shirts, I wear them a few times and then they either end up as a rag or get donated to a poor school. I did treat my IMFL and IMCDA shirts with respect...they were donated.

    Whoops - I'm off topic on my own thread! image Hope they have a cool shirt at IM South Carolina that I might want to keep for more than a few months.

    I would be all over an IM in Columbia, especially if it were in the Fall and could possibly qualify someone for the following year.

    IMCali: 9/11/01 happened and Camp Pendleton suddenly got very busy, with better things to do. They shut down the base for all riding for a couple years (if you wanted to ride from LA to SD you now had to jump in the I-5 freeway for about 8 miles, as they wouldn't let you ride on base. I think there was no race at all on CamPen for a couple years, then the full become a half. But the start/transition/finish area was moved from the base, at the Delmar boat basin (where they launch amphib stuff) to the Oceanside harbor. The only thing that now goes through base is the bike course.

    Vineman full is a very lonely race. I went up to see it in '03, riding the bike course backwards during the event. See an athlete...then 5-8' later another athlete.

    I live just outside Columbia...an IM would have to be in spring or fall, the summers are just too hot and humid...wouldn't want any part of a summer death march.

    @ Coach Rich - thanks for the backdrop on IMCALI - I wondered what happened to it. I did the aqua bike at the Great Floridian last year as part of my ramp up for IMAZ and the bike ride was also very lonely. There was just no mojo in that race. I tip my hat to the folks who make it through the independents with little to no support.

    WTC seems to be making the rounds everywhere. We've had sightings here in the Outer Banks as well. I don't put much weight into any of it until I start to see or hear about stuff getting signed. I think their interests here in OBX would be the Half (we don't have a good venue for a full) and frankly, I'd be bummed if they "bought out" our grass roots Half.

    I'd be surprised if the folks in Wilmington, NC aren't also getting a few peaks from WTC. Beach 2 Battleship has continued to grow and is gaining a good reputation.
