Powertap Hub battery question

Is there any way to tell how much battery life the PT hub battery has left?  I just bought my PT through Rich this fall and am using it on a trainer through the winter.  I see the manual says the battery should last 400 hours but didn't know if there was some way to tell when the battery is wearing down.  Should I have another battery on hand for when it does go out?  Do people change their hub batteries before doing a big race?

  • I am unaware of a metering system.

The first symptom I get that it's going out is that it's ok indoors, but if you go out on a colder day, it'll cut out as the battery gets cold (and the voltage drops).

I think it's just as easy to replace it once a year (either now or when I start going outside again) and not worry about squeezing every last minute out of the batteries.

  • No "meter" that I know of. A little icon on the LYC will flash to indicate the signal to the Hub is weak. Generally the sign that the battery needs to be replaced. I usually change the battery once a year before my A race regardless of what it says- the peace of mind is worth it to me.
  • Yep, what Nemo said.  Bought my pt last fall (November) and didn't change the batteries until right before IMWI in Sept.

  • Typically the low battery warning is good for at least a day or two so you'll get some notice that it's time to change out batteries.
  • The Joule will throw a warning in the upper right hand corner saying low hub battery....I just found this out
  • I use a Garmin...not the LYC... no special indicator, unfortunately.
