The Island of Misfit Toys - 2011 Edition!

Hi,

Yes EnduranceNation is all about long course triathlon, but there are also some "misfits" around here - people who are taking a break from from focusing on tri's for a while to chase other goals.

If your "A" race this year isn't a triathlon - then the Island is for you.  Post up a reply about the details of your adventure, and the other misfits will be with you through your journey!

  • Misfit toys or Rogues? which one is it?

    Or Misfit Rogues?

  • My A race for 2011: Desert RATS multiday foot race.  It's 148 miles over 6 days over the Kokopelli Trail from Western Colorado to Moab, Utah.

    Here's the schedule (in miles):

    Mon: 20

    Tues: 39

    Wed: 9

Thurs/Fri: 52 (with a tasty climb from 4000' up to 8000' over the course of the day!)

    Sat: 26.2

There is a substantial amount of required equipment that we'll have to carry - survival stuff.

This race is different from Marathon des Sables in that the race crew will move one small bag between camps (24"x12"x12") - but this has to contain your sleeping bag, sleeping pad, special race food that you might want, clothes, etc.  Also, the race provides camp food, and aid station stuff, and plenty of water.  I'm hoping it's plenty of water since the average daily temperature is 95f.

    Here's a video from the 2009 race:

I'm very stoked about this race.  I'll do a write up of my gear so far sometime soon .

  • @Scott - Well, I see a lot of talk about Rogues - but it's going on in the Jan OS thread, so most members won't be in those threads.  Mike

  • I think rogues is for folks who are still thinking Tri, just on an alternative to EN schedule. Misfits are just crazy looney folks totally OTR (off tha rez). image
  • @ Mike - I envy you..... I just don't know if I have the courage to persue that kind of thing. I have often thought about races like Western States or Badwater but can't seem to bring myself to commit to a progression that will put me there. Maybe someday. Since I only have a single 50 miler behind me, it would be a long road for sure.....

I will be keenly interested in your adventure. Just Awesome in my book!
  • LOVE THIS! Go Misfits! Mike, you rock!
  • Just caught this thread and the video below - wow!  So many races / events on the wish list - afraid I got into this endurace sport  thing too late (45) to do'em all......

  • @Pete, don't ever let Sister Madonna Buder hear you talk about starting too late!! She began at 48, and has completed something like 35 Iron distance races!! And she's about the nicest, most gracious person you could ever meet.

It does take us old guys a bit longer to get up to speed tho image
