Treadmill Allows You Take a Virtual Run Anywhere on Google Earth

Panasonic and Nordic Track partner to setup a treadmill that works like a Computrainer. Pick a route using Google Earth and the route will be shown on the display while the treadmill adjusts to the terrain. http://mashable.com/2011/01/12/virtual-run-feels-rea/

Who was shopping for a treadmill?

  • Pretty cool. I wonder if it can do "downhill" too or if it just assumes flats during the downhill sections. Would make a course like Boston a lot easier IMHO.
  • There are TMs that offer small declines, like up to 3% (the things I learned when researching). Not sure you would ever want to do that on a TM. I iamgine it would really feel like falling as the belt moves out behind you.

Still, it is a very cool feature. A great way to practice a course if you can't afford to fly there. I rode the IMWI course on the CT for 2 Sunday workouts when I had to be out of town and readjust the entire weekend of training last summer. I do think it helped mentally. The stick portion I had only ridden once on our rally trip. But I rode it 2 more times at home and it helped me pace those hills properly.
