Back probelm keeping me from running??

Not sure what happened, but my back has really gone out on me.  I was able to complete the FTP intervals on the bike yesterday, and it actually made me feel better.  Running is out of the question - can't even stand up straight.  My guess is that I'll be able to run again by next week, but not before.  I guess my choices are to do more biking, substitute the ellyptical, or just rest the extra days.  Any suggestions?

  • Bob,
I'd suggest posting to med forum...some great med minds over there.
Good luck...I just worked thru a back issue myself, but very different from yours.
  • Bob,
William gave good advice - post up a thread in the med forum. And please give more details! It hurts when I do this... The pain is sharp/dull... It's right above my pelvis, off to the side, etc. Any prior injuries? Have you seen a physical therapist or chiropractor?
A back problem can be any one of about 400 things, so more info is needed to focus in on the problem...and then a solution.
I hope you find relief soon, I know that back problems can be a big pain!

  • Thanks - I'll post it over there as well. But my question is really more a training question than a medical question. I've had this enough that I know how to get better in the next week or 10 days with the help of my chiro - just not sure the best thing for my training in the meantime. Hate to start OS with a bad week or two. Maybe it's a short enough time that it doesn't make that much differnce as long as I make sure I get better.
  • Bob, if you are trying to figure out what to do about your run workouts, have you thought about water running? I had a friend who was training for a marathon and got a stress fractor and she water ran. Here is an article to read to help you make your decision http://pfitzinger.com/labreports/water.shtml .it might be a good option until your back can handle pounding again?
  • the question I have is, if this is chronic, have you ever shifted into heavy duty core training mode (once it isn't sore). Last time I really did a lot of interval work, I had to implement consistent core work to help strengthen the trunk and my back problems really subsided.

  • @Brenda - water running is a good idea - never tried that before

@Paul - I've had this issue since about 1987. I'm pretty good about keeping up my core strength, but this time it just got away from me for some reason. We looked after our twin ganddaughters on Sunday - maybe I lifted one of them the wrong way. I've never really done this much high intensity running this early in the season - that also may have something to do with it. Probably more core work is a good idea.
