Mooseman power file/experience

Looking for data from anyone who was recording power at last year's Mooseman Half. I am interested in what wattage compared to FTP that you climbed the major hill on the course. I have been talking to a friend who mentioned that he found it impossible to stay at a reasonable wattage level using his 50-34 and 12-28 and the climb lasted 19 minutes for him. Was that anyone elses experience?

Thanks

Ian

  • Ian, I did not race it but rode that monster 3 times last year with a gang of EN'ers.  I know a few raced so they might have power, but I wouldn't be suprised if folks weren't able to keep the numbers low.  IIRC, the climb is about 5k and really spikes at the end.

However, even though you may be forced to ride higher watts, there's also a long descent afterward.  Might even be longer than the climb.  Plenty of time to recover.

You'll have to come up an ride it in the spring.  We could organize another group ride.

  • I've registered for both Mooseman Oly and HIM.... Never done either. I'd be interested in getting a chance to ride the course.

I did the race last year and I also rode the course proir to with Dave as he eluded to.  I just took a quick look at my numbers.   My FTP was 271 at race time.  1st Loop   NP  246   Avg Cad  78   Avg speed 9.5

2nd Loop  NP  249  Avg Cad   79   Avg speed 9.5

Pretty damm consistant,  So I rode the climb @ 91-92 %    a little high but felt like I was not pushing it very hard and it felt comfortable.

I have a compact crank and I believe I had a 12-27 at that race.

If you have any other questions let me know.

  • @Dave - thanks for the reply and offer for the ride. A group of us from Long Island are thinking of coming up to ride the course, i will let you know if that happens.

@Bob - great to see that you have some data that shows it should be able to be done at  reasonable wattage given the gearing. Thanks for including the cadence numbers as well. Do you mind sharing your approx race weight? i am about 152 with a FTP of ~260, the person who gave me the original information is about 185lbs so that may have more to do with the higher wattage.

    Ian,

At that weight and FTP, you can easily do that climb and stay within the recommended wattage range. Just don't be foolish and follow the crowd early on!

  • Ian,  I raced Mooseman at approx. 148-150 lbs

The climb during the race was actually easy compared with trying to keep up with the Halligan and Coach P during a  3 loop training ride 3 weeks prior to the race.

Coming up and doing the climb several times is a very smart thing to do mentally.  It's was funny that during the  training ride the 2nd loop was easier than the first, and I could have killed Coach P when he talked us into doing a 3rd loop. It is not in my nature to back down to anything , but I thought there was no chance in hell I could do another, strangely enough the 3rd loop was even more manageable.  Partly mental and partly just learning how to ride it properly.

Lets us know when you guys are going up, definately  want to do another epic ride up there in preparation for LP.

  • Totally doable to ride sub FTP on that climb with the right gearing. image I ride that thing every weekend and there's definitely a learning curve so if you can get the time to ride it pre-race, definitely recommend it.

Also- the course is likely changing for this year so you should only have to go up it once versus the two looper. Will depend on how the roads handle the winter once all the snow melts.
  • Thanks again everyone for the information. It seemed that it should be possible and the confirmation is helpful. @Bob I am certian that you are right about it being easier in the race than ridiing it with Halligan & Patrick -those guys can really pump out the watts.

  • Let's be clear that DnP rode that on road bikes, Bob in aero position...it's a great climb to recon as it's epically hard. The post climb descent + ensuing drag race on rte 3 make it manageable!
