Okay so here is a question for the Haus

trip up a curb, landed hard on my right foot and now I have extreme heel pain.

I am in week 7 of Dec OS and really want to test next week.

I skipped the run repeats today to rest it. I am wondering if anyone has any advice/recommendations etc...?

Thanks,

Paul

  • Missing the first part of the story "During my last stride in yesterday's brick I ..."
  • Not a medical peep, but:

    - Obviously if you can't bear any weight on it, get to a doctor for an evaluation.

    - Ice and ibuprofen. I've had really good luck with a bucket filled with ice water. Submerge foot for about ten minutes at a time. Sounds like this only happened 24 hours ago, so I'd be icing a few times a day to get through the acute phase.

The optimist in me says, don't panic, this might just be a bruise or you might have just irritated the soft tissues down there. If you don't notice improvement after 48-72 hours, then call in the medical troops.

  • If the pain is on the bottom of the foot just forward of the heel strike area, you may have had a heel spur that is now a source of your pain.

Ice as suggested above. Massage the arch area but avoid putting pressure over the pain site just yet. No running for a bit. You may need to see a podiatrist if things aren't calming down. Be sure to stretch the calf. Limping can cause it to tighten.

Gel heel cushion may help relieve pressure.

  • Thanks Suzanne and Michelle.

Had been icing, but not in a bath that worked really well yesterday. I believe it is soft tiissue bruise in the heel itself as it is only pressure directly on that part that is sore.

If I wear supportive and snug (in the heel) shoes, it doesn't hurt to walk, although I can tell I am not wanting to land on the heel itself.

    Thanks,

    Paul

  • Plantar fasciitis can sometimes present as heel pain but usually more towards the anterior part of the heel. Though usually a chronic injury it can be caused by a single inciting event. I got it from a basketball injury in the past. If you find that your foot is very stiff in the morning and you have pain or trouble with flexing the foot downward, this would be consistent with plantar fasciitis.

If there is significant point tenderness and it is not improving or maybe even getting worse a calcaneal fracture should be entertained and you probably should go see a doctor. But based on your last post it wounds like it's getting better.
