I'm not getting everything I should out of the OS and I blame...

LIFE!!!

I'm a little bummed that my OS so far has been kind of a bust.  I'm certainly not blaming the EN plan (it's great).  Life has just gotten in the way. Damn that life!  How dare it?

I had a late season IM (IMFL).  I took about four weeks off which meant I started the plan in the beginning of December.  I then had a couple of good weeks of workouts.  Then there was nearly two weeks of vacation around Christmas.  I picked up a stomach virus at the end of that vacation and still suffered for a few days when I returned home.  I then had to finish preparing for a federal criminal trial that began last week and will probably go through next week.  I have been working crazy work hours since returning from vacation in early January.  This morning was basically the first time I've seen my kid in a week (which is far more of a bummer than not hitting my workouts)

I have three early season races (an Oly on 4/3, a 70.3 on 4/10 and a IM on 5/21).  While I'm not out of shape per se, I just haven't had the time to tear up the OS like I would have liked.  Just frustrated since my plan has gone to hell in a hand basket.  Life should return to normal later next week and I'll have a solid 5 weeks or so left on my OS before starting the 12 week IM plan for IMTX.

Whining done!

  • image good luck with the last 5 weeks- I feel your pain about life getting in the way as I've had a bit of a illness derailment myself. I just remind myself that some OS is way better than the majority's 5 hours on the drainer at zone 2 plan!!
  •  Wait.  I'm not done whining.

I wasn't supposed to work yesterday since the judge was taking the day off from trial (and I haven't had a day off in a couple of weeks).  Needless to say I was called in for some issue anyway which took about 12 hours to resolve.

Today was going great.  I was hanging out with my son and having a blast outside when my Blackberry blows up with calls again.  Four hours later that's resolved.

I'm going to hop on my bike and ride like a madman for an hour because I'm freaking irritated.  I will channel that anger and take it out on my bike.

  • Bob - I would probably stay in the OS until 6-8 weeks out from your first race, utilizing the long ride and run options as you get inside the 12 week mark. That will gives you more like 7-8 weeks in OS, which isn't 20, but IS better than 5.
  • Stephen,
The weekday bike and run workouts for the IM plan are similar to the OS workouts (at least they were last year). I'm not worried about not getting as good a workout in during that 12 weeks. My whiney rant had to do with the fact that I haven't been able to attack the OS as I would have liked. I wasn't going to get a 20 week OS in anyway since I didn't start until December due to IMFL. My OS was only going to be 13 weeks at best.

I'll be fine. I was just cranky as hell yesterday.
  • I think the fact you are handling training + all your other commitments so wel is proof that you'll be ready to dominate the weaker competition come race day!!!
  • There is some good news.  Your body reacts to stress the same way.  What I mean is that physiologically, stress evokes the same response whether it is at work (in the courtroom) or out riding/ running on the roads.  That is why you need to balance the workouts with what is going in your personal life and not get cooked.  So if you look at the trial as another type of workout, it may help

  • So the three hours spent testifying in federal court yesterday counts as a workout. I like that way of thinking. ;-)

For the record... I'm on the good guys' side.
  • Not sure of how to log time spent in court in terms of TSS but know that days spent in the Coutroom leave me shelled most of the time. Trials are much more fun, interesting and a hell of a lot quicker on TV. In real life even short ones suck the life out of you. I find running everyday makes it go better.

I would not worry much about how you are feeling. Looks to me like you may not have taken enough of a break before jumping into the OS anyhow. There will be plenty of opportunity to crush yourself during the IM plans...

Good luck with all of it...oh and everyone thinks they are on the good guys side :-)
  • Chris,
Are you an attorney? Prosecution, defense or civil? Preparing for trial sucks a hundred times more than the trial itself. Testifying isn't a lot of fun but it beats the months leading up to it.
