Total time

Hi,

I am new to EN and I will admit I haven't been able to get through all of the reading and forums/groups/wiki yet. I am just trying to stay on top of my plan, which is going well. But, I don't know if the total time listed on the right of the master set includes the warmup from above or no? So, when it says 45 minutes of running workout, does it include the 10' easy and then 3x30" (30"), or is the warmup in addition, so I would be working out for a total of about 58 minutes??

  • I always consider the listed time as 'work' time. However, the only thing that RnP are really worried about is your getting the main set(s) done. After that, you are free to add z3 time to hit the time allotted. So, if it says 45', I will usually warm up 5-10 and count that, but, I am generally building to z3 during that time and getting in 1 or 2 z4-5 intervals (usually like 30-45") just to make sure my legs are awake. If I am just spinning (in either wu or cd) I don't count that because I don't consider that to be 'work'.

  • Plus, you'll see that the total time listed can be really off sometimes depending on a lot of factors. I would use it as a loose guide, but if you go over or under as long as you are doing the main set you are good to go. Welcome to EN!
  • I would say that Math isn't RnP's strong point. I too quetioned this early on and was told the WU was included in the time. But this clearly is not the case in some of the current bike workouts. No biggie either way . Welcome to EN
  • I always do the suggested warm-up for the runs and bikes, but sometimes have to modify the lengths to fit it all in on the time allotment, because I signed up for the shorter workouts and do not want to do more than assigned.

    eg. bike warm-up usually is 10minZ1, 3 x 3min Z3, 1min Z1

For the longer Nov OS bike last week I did 5 min Z1 and 3 x 1 min Z3, 1 min Z1 and there really was not much of a cooldown, but my HR drops super fast after the workout, so by the time i get off the bike, unlock the trainer wheel, turn off the fan and get my bike shoes off I am cooled down.
  • The only math I am good at right now is the TEMPERATURE. image
  • Agreed Coach P. We are both suffering on the east coast with the brutal temps. Minus 39c yesterday for my run. Not attempting that in the future. I froze!
  • I am new to EN and it seems there are many different approaches to total time with respect to including/not including the warmup. RnP are pretty casual about the total time in some of the wiki materials and really emphasize the importance of the main set (I recall reading one document that says they only put a total time because everyone freaks out if it isn't listed).

Personally I take the total time to be the total time of the entire workout, including warmup. Clearly doing the full 20-minute bike warmup as listed will put you over the total time in many cases, so my general approach has been a 10 minute warmup followed by the main set followed by the z3 "remainder". If there are workouts in the future where the main set plus 10 mins is longer than the total time I'll probably go over the total time, since on the bike I actually need a 7-10 minute warmup to get going.
  • I believe the Total Time is more of a guideline.  How long you warm up can differ from person to person. They key is to get the Main Set completed and get the Work portion accomplished.   After the work is complete it is then up to you if you have the luxury of going longer or need to cut it short due to other obligations......

I would not get too caught up in Total time because, as the coaches will advise, it is all about how much work you accomplish not how much time you put in and that equation can take many different forms......

  • From Coach R: The entire workout (WU + MS + CD) is 60'…or it could be 45'….or it could be 75'. We don't really care. How long is 100% a function of much time you do/don't have, is entirely up to you, and we only put 60' there because if we didn't everyone would ask us for it anyway :-)

I count the warm up for the run in the total time, but not for the bike. My cool down is walking up the basement stairs.
  • I count the WU in my total time usually ten minutes for the bike and fifteen for the run.  Cool down on the bike is about 2 minutes and on the run is coming around the corner and walking 30 yards to my front door.  Anything after the MS is always Z3.

This is exactly what I do as well.
