Missing a workout during the OS...which to forego?
Hello Team.
If life gets in the way of a workout, how do you all modify your week? Which workout do you choose to give up?
Specifically, life dictated that I was not going to get today's VO2 bike work. Tomorrow is supposed to be a VO2_run, but I am strongly considering back-to-back bike workouts. The main reason being that I feel I get more 'work' on the bike than I do on the run. Additionally, two weekends ago as I was about to get on my bike for the Long_FTP ride of the weekend, my son asked the irresistible question --- "Dad, will you play with me?" Hell yes I said yes!!
So, since I know doing a mid-week 'two-a-day' of VO2 bike and run workouts on the same day is probably *not* the Haus answer, what do you all recommend?
(a) - just press on as if I got today's VO2 bike done and stay on schedule by running tomorrow
or
(b) - do a VO2 ride tomorrow and then pickup the OS plan on Thursday?
Thanks,
Joe
PS - I am in my second week of VO2 work for the Nov Intermediate OS....if that affects your recommendation

If I miss, skip, ignore, or otherwise don't do a workout, I have reluctantly learned to just grit my teeth and let it go. I don't make them up or try to cram several together at this time of year - the intensity level of the OS mandates spacing the workouts to get sufficient rest between them. The guilt only lasts about 12 hours or so, and of course, there's the added benefit of making the next workout that much easier!
"In-season", I absolutely, positively try to arrange my life to make sure I do the long run and the weekend brick each week. Next in line for priority are the interval workouts for running and biking - one day a week on the trainer for me year-round, and a track session a week is also high on my ust do list.
One of the podcasts for the OS (Week 4, Rest & Recovery) has Coach Rich telling us which elements of a workout we can slack on first in the OS.
In the grand scheme of things, missing a single workout during the OS is not going to derail your gains in the least. Diminish ... perhaps slightly ... but not derail. The other thing that you need to consider is the bigger picture of your week. Back-to-back bike days followed by only one rest day (Fri) will definitely impact your Sat brick. You may have to roll the dice and see what happens. Will the gains of a Wed bike outweigh the potential losses of a Sat blowup? Hard to say. Ultimately, it's all recreation, so my vote is to go with your gut and do whatever best satisfies you personally.
Bingo! Sport will be there for you until your body falls apart. Your kids will be be there for you well after your body falls apart. Give them sufficient reason not to put you in a "home," and the rest is gravy.
my new years res: don't feel guilty if life gets in the way sometimes!
glad you played with your kiddo!

@justin - we should create a home for aged EN members! we can have endurance races with our walkers!
A bit late to the q, but I would do the bike/run brick, and then run. But I'd add 20-30 z2 at the end of the run.
The broader comment from posters - a skipped session in an otherwise consistent season is just a cost of doing business - is spot on, though. I more or less bank on this during the v02 max block.
