Up coming test

Thinking about backing off this Saturdays tough VO2 max and taking things a little easier but stuck in the what to do thing.....I want to crush my test on Monday but will be doing it at 0430 d/t work so want to be overly rested. I am currentlly sitting at 187 and shooting for 200-205 but if I go into it like I felt today that will be an epic failure. My Saturdays ride mimics today but 75 min. So 5x2.5's and the remainder at 85%.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

  • I have read others commenting that the week 14 test can be done with the first 20 at your old/current FTP, and then try to bang it out on the second one. You may slightly underestimate FTP that way, but are less likely to crash and burn due to the VO2 stuff fatigue.
  • Sounds like a question for the coaches. I think if you rest HARD (as Coach P) would say on Sunday then you should be good to go on Monday for your test. I read a great post before my last test and it went something like this.

    First 20min block
Complete the first 5-10min at your current FTP and then raise it up to whatever you think your new FTP is and maintain for the next 10minutes, then after the 2min break, try to hold what you held for the last 10minutes of the first 20minutes for the second 20minutes of the test.

    Does this make sense.

If you are still worried that your ride on Saturday is going to affect your Monday test even after a hard rest on Sunday, then I think just doing the Z4 work on Sat should be good. You are going to be doing some really hard work on your test on Monday so you have not lost much as far as I am concerned.

  • @ William-Sounds like a plan...I think I am going to go with the current FTP for 12-15 min then drop the damn hammer and up the gear and crush the mother and burn some rubber on the trainer.....going to try and keep the 2 min break at 130-150 watts and cont with the second 20. Art who is close to my FTP did this and thought it worked well. It is funny how there is a method to testing but truly it is all about pace.

@ Brenda....I think our process is a lot like arts also. I want 205 really bad but I know a gain is a gain and we have a lot of training to go...I am so Type A though anything less would frustrate me and make me work that much harder. I am not sure there is much harder left in these legs and butt. I am getting a J-LO butt image My wife seems to like image
  •  Carl I'm on duty Saturday, so I did the Friday run today, I'm doing the brick tomorrow, and I'm taking Saturday and Sunday off.  I took Wednesday off this week as well.  i am also hoping for big things Monday, as I was a bit disappointed in my last test.

    Good luck!

    Chris-

I like that plan and best of luck to you!!!!!  I would love to do my Sat workout tomorrow but bro you know how it is...lack of sleep already d/t last shift and then worked in ER last night.  Lots of Strep, Influenza A, and gastro going around.  I do not want to run myself down so low that my immune is paying the price.....

Tear it up Monday and let me know how it goes!!

  • Carl, let us know how the test goes and if our advice helped.
  • @Carl, a little clip for you dude.

Seriously, do the workout as written.  Rest Sunday hard.  Come back Monday and crush it.  Pacing advice above is great.  But don't married to a number, it is what it is and maybe is limiting you as well.

Good luck and let us know how it goes.

  • Do the Sat workout as written if you feel okay, just keep it to work only and done (40'-ish). Remember, if you test at 250, but feel like 265 is more real, you can bump it up when training!

  • Carl,  what sticks out to me is the TT work at 0430.  That is tough!  Cuz I've been doing some of that myself.  HOWEVER, this time I'm going to go EARLIER! like 8-9 hours earlier image

I'm gonna hit the Saturday brick early, and then the FTPtest Sunday evening.  Logistics note...some of the motivation for this comes from the fact that my son is having surgery on Wednesday so I'm moving that run test to Tuesday.

Anyhow, its just something to consider as an option, be honest with yourself based on how you're feeling these days and the timing/duration of the Saturday workout.
