Help me put my Quarq on my road bike!!

Looking for some help...

My Quarq is on my tri bike. It is an SRAM with a standard GXP BB. I'd like to put it on my road bike from time to time (Trek Madone 5.1). However, my road bike is a Shimano 6700 crank with BB90. My understanding is that BB90 is not like BB30 and is compatible with any Shimano-style crank that would typically use external cups (i.e. an FSA crank would fit right in there, despite the bearings being inside the BB shell), but that in general this is not compatible with SRAM.

Is this going to work for me or am I hosed?? If it will work, what do I need to do.

Thanks, Matt

  • BB90 is just Trek's version of BB86/BB92.  It is basically bearings that are pressed into the BB like BB30 instead of threaded in like traditional BBs.  However with BB86/90/92 you can still use your GXP crank.  In other words all you need to do is buy and install the correct BB and you will be all set.

    Check out Page 11:

It includes the part numbers if you want to get the BB from Trek/Bontreger directly.  I believe the SRAM BB86/92 Pressfit BB kit also fits just fine but I have not tried it so you may want to just go to a Trek dealer or ask someone who as first.

Don't forgot to add a magnet for the quarq when you are putting the BB in.  It will need to be glued on since you are pressing the bearings in.

  • pretty sure that you can put about any BB in the Madone, you might need a different kit to put a GXP BB in there. What BB is in the Madone now?

naturally mancona beat me to it with more detailed information

  • I believe someone is supposed to post a video of a Quarq swap for the rest of us to see.

Seriously Matt, whenever you get a chance I'd be very interested (and I'm sure many others here would be too) in seeing this. (Unless of course you did it already and I missed it somehow.)
  • @Cary - sorry, totally forgot. It's not happening this weekend with Abigails 1st birthday and the superbowl, but I will get to it.
  • @Matt - no worries. Happy Birthday to Abigail from Atlantic Beach, NY
