Do you jiggle your days around much?

Wasn't sure if this would go in Macro or not, so threw it in here!

Due to work/pool opening times - I constantly have to take the week and rearrange. I'm doing OS with swimming but never have the days off on the prescribed day often end up biking back to back. Is this going to have any detrimental effetcs?

  • Charlie--I have the same question, but am not sure of the answer. I am getting in all the workouts, but not necessarily in the prescribed order.

I'll be interested to see the answer.

    Thanks for asking!!

  • I do some shifting sometimes, but try to avoid back to back bikes or runs, and try to make sure I have rest spread out as well. I figure juggling within reason is better than skipping entirely (most of the time).
  • Charlie:  NOPE!  Life gets in the way sometimes.  Do the best you can and get the WORK done.  However, as noted, be sure to get the recovery time in.  That is WAY more important than getting a swim in.  And if you need the day off take it.

  • I reconfig my workouts all the time. Sometimes life dictates the day I take off during the OS and it's not the prescribed Monday or Friday. As long as I get in the workouts and recovery then I feel good about it.
  • All the time, I work a rotating 24 hr shift, with 48 hrs off. I can run at work but bring my bike their and setting it up sux. This week is pretty easy I work Wednesday and Saturday. My week will likely look like. I don't have a definite hack for the times every third week when I work monday thursday and sunday.
    Monday off
    Tuesday bike
    Wednesday run @ work
    Thursday Bike
    Friday Saturday's bike
    Saturday Sunday's run at work
    Sunday Rest.

  • I do my very best and have been pretty consistent. During the week is a bit easier than the weekends.

I started swimming in January and even with harder swims I just don't tend to feel the effects of it in my bike or run. But I also swam in college and haven't really crushed myself in the water yet. So take that for what its worth.
  • First 7 or so weeks of the OS I followed it pretty much to the day.

Since then though, with the awful weather in the Northeast and my lack of a treadmill on the weekends and gym at work during the week, my weeks have been typically:

    Monday - Tuesday Bike

    Tuesday - Wednesday Run

    Wednesday - Thursday Bike

    Thursday - Rest

Friday - do the Sunday run

Saturday - do the Saturday Bike

    Sunday - REST

that said, I still do have to rearrange now and then.  destination wedding this past Saturday night and made things tricky, so did a run today at lunch.

  • Do chamelions change color? I switch all the time depending on how I feel and what my schedule for the week looks like. However, in the IM plan, I'm pretty good about hitting long runs on Thursday and getting the big bike weekends in...all else is flexible.
  • I switch all the time - agree with others that long bike and run are the most impotant. Would try not to do two days in a row of the same sport - the intensity is just too high this time of year.

if I tried to do that and was actually able to finish both workouts, i would suspect my FTP/Threshold pace needs tweaking

  • I switch fairly often...but last week I did the VO2 run Friday and the Sunday run Saturday....HUGE mistake. I sure felt it the next day...and today...
  • All very good comments from people who are adapting the plans to fit their schedule. See...you DON'T have to pay a coach $$$/mo to make you a "customized" training plan! You can just rely on the experience and comments from for peers, and your own smarts, to roll your own!

    My notes:

    • Back to back hard rides probably isn't "too" bad.
    • Back to back hard runs would be very bad.
    • Generally, hard run followed by a hard bike is more doable than hard bike followed by a hard run.

You can always post your proposed schedule for next week in the Micro thread and PnI will help you there. Or you can have fun and ask the team for their comments in your own thread. Just don't ask us on Sunday night to fix your training for next week. Thanks.

  • I am 6 weeks into the OS and have done a bunch of swapping. Most commonly:
    - Swap Saturday brick and Sunday run...no problems with that
    - Move Tuesday brick to Monday...no problems with that

The only time I've had a problem is when trying to "make up" for a missed workout. Apparently all the folks who tell you this is a bad idea are correct. Last week I did a hard run in the early afternoon at work then followed it with a brick in the evening. Bad idea that resulted in a nice cramping calf on the bike.
  • I travel every other week for work.  So every other week I have to juggle things around.  I did it all last year.  I also tried to avoid doing runs on back to back days.  If I had to, I would do a run in the morning and the next day do the other run in the evening.  Not great but at least I had 36+ hours between runs instead of just 24.  There were times I would just have to take an extra day off.

  • Agree with everyone. I'm about to start my weekly "work/family calendar v. OS training plan mambo" to see where all my workouts shake out for the week before I place my workouts on my Training peaks calendar. Week 19 of the Oct OS and its worked out very well. Very rare to do them all on the prescribed days, but they all get done.
  • I have found that I get the best results (more adaptation) from a 3 day block as prescribed in the outseason (tuesday-wednesday-thursday). However, my 3 day block may not start on a tuesday. Also I try to sandwich my 3 day block with rest days on both ends. I use those rest days to work on my form in the pool so the intensity is very low. The 3 day block is my money maker and everything else is the icing.
