VDOT conversion for sand / snow

Saturday I was running in the snow and slush in Wisconsin.  Today I ran on the beach in LaJolla (work trip).  I'm wondering if anyone has a good rule of thumb for training pace adjustments for these different conditions.  Do you add or subtract xx%?  Just use the same pace and work harder?

I suspect there's no clear answer to this (i.e. "it depends"), but thought it worth asking.  How do you guys handle different conditions?

  • I would just run at the effort of pace x and realize that my actual pace will be slower.

LaJolla is very, very cool, though I haven't been through there in years.

  • Did a sprint with a beach run, found that I was about 15s /mi slower than I expected. Of course, YMMV depending on hard packed sand vs loose stuff far from the water.
  • Just run hard...appreciate the variety! image
  • Thanks everyone for the input. It was fairly hard pack, wet sand. It was nice running outside without the impact stress on the knees. The beach was only about a mile long, so the laps got tedious, but all I had to do was image the snow and cold back home and all complaints disappeared. With the advice to focus more on effort than pace, I had a couple of good workouts.
    Cheers!
