VASA Trainer

Has anyone ever trained on the VASA or swimming? http://www.vasatrainer.com/index.ph...r_Swimmers

My coaching friend has used it for his dryland training over the winter. He does 2-3 x a week for 15 minutes and says that he went to LP last year without swimming in open water or a pool all winter long and swam 2000 meters no problems.

Thoughts?

  • I was a competitive swimmer in my younger days. My dad bought one for my sister and I. It does a good job of simulating your upper extremity workload. I used it mainly for missed pool workouts as well as 'strength' training. I would increase the resistance to moderate-hard and then go hard for the time length of my event. I also did some core stuff/simulation of wall push-offs.
Could a seasoned swimmer ie.someone who does not need technique work get by with using this only, probably. My guess is that 15 minutes in prep for an IM distance swim would not be adequate. Based on my experience again someone who is just looking for endurance with swimming specific muscles could use the trainer for the length of time approximated for race distance.
Honestly, I used it for a few seasons but ultimately preferred to pound the water.
  • Thanks Carly. That helps. It is sitting in my training studio, so it is there for the use.
