Question For The Folks in OS Groups

Hi Gang:

Need some help looking ahead into OS (currently in the rocking January OS) and seeing if what my plans are makes sense since the later weeks in OS look fairly brutal in the new Plans based on the Tweets and Dashboard posts I have been seeing.

Looking at the calendar I am 12 weeks away from my scheduled  Napa Half Ironman the end of April.  I am considering overlaying the HIM Plan on top of the JOS Plan.  I  am considering doing all the mid-week scheduled OS stuff and then run and ride the HIM Plan scheduled weekend stuff.  However, I would probably not ride both Saturday and Sunday.  Just run long on the Saturday and do the 180' bikes with scheduled intervals, etc. on Sunday.

Thoughts with doing this as I approach the next 14 or so weeks left in OS?  Do-able?  Just focus on OS?  Any other way I should approcah this?

Thanks in advance for your help.

John

  • John, why not stay with the JOS and add volume to the bike and run? And aren't you already doing this? Why not stick with the OS for another 5-6 weeks and then do the last 6 weeks of the HIM plan? I'm sure you will be swimming so that shouldn't be an issue. And why jack up your volume right now when you don't need to. Long season and IMAZ is your focus right?
I'm sure you would be fine with overlaying the plans but why not accelerate the OS? Maybe jump a couple weeks ahead so you can get 4 weeks or so of VO2 work then a couple more weeks of threshold then jump into the HIM plan after a week of transition?
  • As soon as the weather gets better, every workout on the weekend will be longer. During the week, as the weather gets better and the time change happens in March, the weekday workouts will be getting longer too.

But, just like we do in the OS, as long as the main set (MS) is done, the rest is gravy!
  • John- I had a similar question last year because of injury and Rich suggested staying in the OS but extending my Saturday bike with more Z3 work to get up to HIM distance. The run work pretty much stayed the same since the OS does a good job of prepping you for a half, though he did say I could add on more Z3 to the run too if I was feeling good on Sunday.
  • @Tucker - Never thought of jumping ahead in OS.  Based on yours and the others Tweets I have been dreading the next section of OS so not to keen on it.  But will look at that.  Pain is pain, right?

Also, my year is broken up into 3 parts.  OS through mid-May, stand down and have "fun with my fitness" (while maintaining my OS gains) trail running, MTB, etc. through EO July and then start the ramp to IMAZ starting in August.  So 2.5+ months of good, fun head space.

@Scott - yep, I get it but a little worried the middle part of OS will be killer and going longer will negatively affect that and visa-versa.  Been riding long a bit lately for fun with my eye on the next bunch of weeks knowing it will be tough.

  • @John - I solely did OS plan work, plus some minimal swimming, leading all the way to Vineman 70.3 last year and had a breakthrough performance and huge PR. As Tucker mentioned, YES, I did add a little volumne here and there on my outdoor rides and on a few outdoor runs - but nothing too significant into my Life time. But overall, it was all OS work and never exceeded 10 hours of training in any week. For my body, my life, the OS is great prep for an HIM. I believe if you just stayed in OS, did your swim thing, you'd be a happy man staying below 10Hrs of training per week; AND Cheryl would be very happy.

One simple solution is to stay in OS until 8 weeks out and then jump over to the HIM plan. Getting fast IS important, but it is also important to have a good build up to the race, and to arrive at race week all dialed in...and I have always felt the HIM work is the best way to prepare for the HIM race. However, if this upcoming race is NOT and A race, maybe just adding weekend volume and keeping on the get fast plan is the way to go.
  • I second Stephen here...go 8 weeks OS, then switch!!!
  • @John- thanks for asking the question. I'm in the same race and was wondering the same thing! See you in Napa!
