What do you do with your medals?

What do you all do with all your race medals (if you don't donate them to a worthy cause like www.medals4mettle.org/)?

Mine are all sitting on my desk right now after they fell from the tacks on my wall.

I saw this (www.heavymedalz.com/images/Shopping...10hook.jpg) at a friend's house and asked her where she got hers (obviously not officially WTC-licensed).

This is what she told me: www.heavymedalz.com/catalog.html#running

  • Mine are hanging from a rafter beam in the garage (my pain cave).
  • They are all stored in a cracker tin on the kitchen counter.
  •  Joe welded this for me back in 2004 before I started triathlons.  I think I got it as a Christmas present (but it might have been a b-day present).  The copper plaque says "Just keep running, running, running"  As you can see, "Nemo" has been with me for a while   With the exception of the ribbon I received after my first running race ever and the Coach Rich button, It only holds Marathon medals.  I've asked him to make a Triathlon one to match.

  • Let me put a plug in for Medals4Mettle. When I first of it from Pam Kassner, I thought: Really? Who would want someone elses race medal? Then I asked some of my patients who are paralyzed or amputees or wheelchair bound what they thought. Most of them said that they would feel priviledged and honored that someone who could run a marathon or do an IM or a 2 mile fun run would give such a memento to them. I don't talk about my personal life much at work; and I especially don't complain about how sore I am after a long bike ride in the sunshine to someone who is a quadraplegic. I assume they don't want to hear about it to remind them about their limitations. For some, that is true. But for many of my patients with limited mobility, they can't wait to hear about my rides, runs, and races...and not in a "Gosh, I wish I could do that" way, but in a "Gee, I can't believe someone would want to or could to that" way. While I stand in awe of my patient who runs his snowblower from his wheelchair with one arm and one leg, he is amazed that anyone would want to move themselves for 140.6 miles in one day with 2 arms and 2 legs.

Anyhoo, I'm getting to a point here. Our race medals may remind us of how much we've achieved. However, they can give hope to and remind other people what they are capable of. What a gift to give and to receive!

  • I've given away over a 100 trophies but no medals. Trophies take a lot more space and schools love 'em for field days. Medals take hardly any space. Most of mine hang on the lower tier of revolving hat rack. Years ago, medals used to come with the short ribbon meant to pin on your shirt...like a miliatry medal. Those are heaped in a couple of glasses I won. The missus allows me to keep one trophy case in the living room for all the trophies that don't look like trophies...everything from silver vases, to crystal, to bronze ships to clay eagles. When I croak, the missus can donate the rest of them.
  • Mine are in the garage with the kids toys. They constantly walk around with them around their necks with a different reason each time which either makes me laugh or makes absolutely no sense to me.
  • Got my medal hanger already, direct from Waco to Dallas. That's about a 90min drive. HAHA

Right below some pics of my (late) momma.
