Bike Pace without Power

Is there a tool for calculating bike pace zones based on TT results? Something like the VDot Calculator used for calculating run pace zones.

I started out using the HR method and have a rough idea of the mph for my zones but I was curious if there's a more accurate method for defining the pace zones for the bike if you're not using Power.

  • There are really just too many external variables that influence pace on a bike for that to be a worthwhile metric. A 1-2% grade vs a -1-2% grade is only a very subtle diffence, but would require a large difference in effort to maintain the same pace. As such, we measure WORK on a bike, not the results...aka, pace. On the run, minor grades, wind, and other variables are much less dramatic as to their influence on pace, so, we use our vDot paces. IF there was a power meter that worked for running, we would certainly be using that instead of pace. So, in short, unless you do all of your riding and racing on a trainer, pace is irrelevant on the bike.

    That make sense?

On a side note...during the OS, you could probably learn/develop/use some rough pace guidelines for riding the trainer, but, you really can't take themm outside.
  • @ Stephen - makes sense. thx
