Video - How to move a Quarq from bike to bike

I finally got around to doing my team EN homework this weekend and had Theresa record me moving my quarq from one bike to another.  I went slow so you can see what I'm doing, however as shown in other videos, it is realistic to do the swap in under two minutes and close to 1 minute if you rush.

I no longer have any icons to post pictures, video, or code to a forum post so all I can do is provide the link to the video.

I did forget to mention in the video, just like switching wheels if you shift to a small gear it is much easier as you have more chain to work with.

  • Nice work Matt! We gotta get this in the wiki!

  • Matt, I think you and Theresa should create, film, distribute, etc, a whole series of basic (and not so basic) maintenance videos for EN. Kidding (kinda).
  • I just tried to access it at school and it is blocked by our filtering software. I will check it out at home. Thanks Matt for making it. I think you have convinced me that I may want a quarq instead of a vector (unproven stuff). Now to save more money....
  • Matt,

Thanks for the video, embedded below.

    1. Torque wrenches are cool, especially ones that come with their own plastic carrying case
    2. Use the torque wrench so you don't overtighten bolts = less likely to strip the head when removing the bolt.
    3. You really, really want get good allens for stuff like this. For very, very important bolts attached to very expensive stuff, I use allens wrenches that do not have a "ball" end. If you look at a variety of wrenches you'll see what I'm talking about.

  • This is great, thanks for posting. A critical thing is that to do what you are showing, the BB in both bikes needs to be compatible with the crank. For example, this will not work if one bike is BB30 and the other is not. Should be obvious but I want to point it out since some people have a different road vs. tri bike setup that might require a new BB with an adapter to be installed in advance of swapping the actual crank.
  • @Rich, I agree 100%. Good tools are a great investment.

@Matt, yes, I assumed people already did that, but I should have stated it. As you mentioned both bike require a compatible BB and a Quarq magnet. You can put a standand crank (threaded BSA) into a BB30 bottom brack with a adapter, but you can't put a BB30 crank into a standard BB ... so anyone in this situation should get the stnadard crank if you want to be able to use it on both a threaded BB and BB30 BB.

@Scott - put your request in and I can see what I can do. I'd rather not do every like thing but if their is something that isn't easily available in a youtube video already, I'm glad to try and help out. I'm doing a complete bike build from scratch somethime next month so get your requests in soon.
  • Hey thanks Matt!.... I have my Quarq on my road bike right now and have been thinking about buying another for the tri bike versus moving back and forth.  I'm a mechanical idiot, but I kind of think I can do this after watching your video.   Really appreciate it.

  • I didn't know it was that easy.  I think it took me longer to move my PT wheel from my 10 speed tri bike onto my 9 speed road bike.

  • Thanks Matt!

I've been asking you do help out out with this for a while now, I'm thinking a quarq is in my future.

Extra double bonus thank you points to Theresa for helping out.

Both of you need to do the 9-sp to 10-sp road bike conversion. New chain, right hand shifter, cassette and a few tools (as well as a strong desire to get it done) are all you need. I finally did mine in November and i swap my PT wheel w/o hassle now. See this thread for more info.
