Heat Wave....Do you change the bike workouts?

Chicago is experiencing a winter heat wave...supposed to be almost 60 by the end of the week!  So....I want to do my Saturday ride/brick run outside.  How should I adapt from the intervals on the trainer to doing it outside?  Or just get out and ride?  This will be my first time outside since October on the bike!

  • No WSM member here but I would suggest do your main sets and then try to accumulate as much z-3 time as you can. Remember if you go longer be prepared for a little extra fatigue the next day.

    Good Luck

  • Like Steve said, Do the workout as scheduled, and then enjoy a little extra time outside having fun in the sun. Try to get in as much Z3 as you can, but be aware of the fact that you are gonna need a little more recovery than usual.
  • Lauren, When I do interval work outside I head to a set of roads where I have little traffic and no stop lights. I the ride the intervals just like in the pain cave , same intensity and durations (a Power meter sure helps with this). Finding a long enough stretch to do a solid 20 min can be a challenge.

If you have to slow down for some major turns or turn around, just ramp it back up hard say at 20% more intensity until you get back to target interval level and a steady state speed. That added pop to get back to speed will compensate for the slow don of the turn. If you can’t find a route that offers minimal interruptions, just do your best to simulate the intervals intensity and duration.

I would say for this week being able to ride out side would be wonderful after a winter in the pain cave so when in doubt JUST ENJOY the ride!
  • Just goes to show it is all relative! image I won't even start an outdoor ride unless it's over 60! If it's a real heat wave with heat index over 110, then I ride earlier, drink more, and hammer the same.
  • Only problem I feel like I am going to run into is the length of some of the intervals. Its hard to find a route that I can go for 20 straight minutes without having to turn, stop, slow, etc.
  • @Lauren, I wouldn't worry about a road that you can go that far too much. Of course I wouldn't ride where you need to stop every block either but there has to be a happy median somewhere. I know I can't find a road where I can go for that long straight so I will just make do. I'm planning on riding Thursday and Friday. Thursday I will just try to make right turns so I won't have to stop and wait and will only have a short lag in my intervals. Friday will do hill repeats for my VO2 work. Should be awesome.
