Thoughts on 2x20'(2') vs 40' TT?

Vets-

I am scheduled to do the below test tomorrow for the bike and am unsure which one to do.  Does anyone with more experience have any thoughts about the pro's and con's of the two?  My instinct is to go with the FTP b/c I stuggle with pacing on the TT.  I am currently training with heart rate (saving up for the powermeter)

My route is a 6 mile loop for warm-up and a long straight road that goes out 10 miles.  The route features no traffic lights, light wind, no climbs,  very low vehicle volume, new asphalt and goes right by "the smallest church in America"!

Your input would be appreciated!

Workout:  Choose one of the following

MS: FTP/Power Test 2 x 20' (2'). Record each 20' segment as interval. Upload workout file into WKO+. Create one range that includes both 2 x 20 intervals, including the 2' rest interval, for a total of 42' for the range. Normalized watts for range is your Functional Threshold. Enter this number in the Threshold Watts field of the Power Zones table on your WKO+ Homepage. --OR--

MS: LTHR Test 3 x 1' (1') Hard, to get your heart rate up and work up a sweat. Then time trial 40' Hard-Very Hard. Take average heart rate for the test as your LTHR. TeamEN Members, enter in Data Tool. Others refer to Quick Start Guide.

  • Hi Brian,

The FTP/Power test, or 2x20(2), is designed for people who use a power meter. The LTHR test, or 40' TT, is designed for HR athletes. That's the one you should do. The good news is that they both will hurt just as much. Have fun!
