Standard or compact crank for IMWI???
What are the recommendations for IMWI crankset? Compact? I'd ask Strauss, but he told me no questions while he's riding :-)
Most of my races have been ridden with a compact. However, I am looking at a new tri bike, and that Scott has my eye, but a compact crank is incompatible with the Scott Plasma 3. Bizarre.
Thanks

To your original question, unless you are riding under 5 hours at IMWI (which only about 15 people do each year), I highly recomend the compact.
Barry, I'm riding compact and 25-12 at IMWI. FYI, the steepest hill is about 7-8% for about .25mi. Same grade but shorter than Salvia Canyon. There's 2 more hills, about a half mile each, at 6%. Chantry is 6%.
As Matt said, the derailuer hanger on my P3C wouldn't accommodate the compact but I fixed that by using a SRAM FD, with two positions.

Thanks everyone. Compact it is. Here is that comment about the Scott Plasma 3 that I've seen in few places. From All3Sports:
3 - Be advised that the new Plasma 3 WILL NOT work with a Compact Crank! The Chainstay mounted brakes will come in contact with the Front Derailleur Cage, rendering it inoperable.
I could see that, basically the FD can't be positioned low enough because of where they put the rear brake. I know first version of the Felt DA that had the brake on top of the chainstay had clerance issues if you did not use a certain brake, therefore I wonder if there is a lower profile brake you could put back their that would allow the compact.
In this case seeing the bike at a LBS is ver valuable so you can see how much room there is down there.
