V02 Workouts / running

So last couple of weeks doing the V02 runs at the track, notice that until I run a couple say 200s my pace is usually fast, then I slow up to hit the pace that the data tool says to hit. But today during my 2 x 1000 I ran the first one like 30 sec faster than supposed to. Tried to slow down on the second one and still ran it 15 sec fast. Is this a problem? Should I make more of a concerted effort to hit the paces as dictated or just run hard and the time is the time?

Thanks for your help.

  • Unlike bike intervals where exceeding prescribed zones in many instances will have limited or sometimes zero downstream physiological cost on subsequent workouts, one needs to be very careful about exceeding the run zones as the physiological cost is much greater simply because running is much more taxing on the body; and subsequent workouts may suffer as a result. My two cents...prove to yourself that it is ok to run faster by testing faster in your next vdot run test.
  • David,

Thanks, that is kinda what I thought but I guess with not doing too many of these types of workouts before I figured I just need to run as hard as I can to hit the paces but in reality I do not need to run "as hard as i can" for a shorter distance otherwise the paces will be faster. Maybe just something I have to get used to. It is not like I was trying to go faster it just happened. Today was the first time I have ever run 1000 intervals so I really had no idea how hard I would have to run, turns out not as hard as I thought. Thanks again and I will try to come closer to the paces.
