Problem with 310xt

 Hello all,

Has anyone else had problems with their 310XT not recording elapsed distance during a session?  This is the second unit I have had this problem with and I really, really, do not want to have to do a Factory Reset to get things working again.  That was all I could get to work the last time this happened.

The crux of the matter is that the unit will display speed (both on the bike from the speed sensor, and while running using GPS signals) and time.  But it will not calculate the distance.  Additionally, the unit will not reset the time back to zero.  Therefore, you get no history........

I have tried numerous soft resets as well as turning it off/turning it on to no avail.  Nor have I found any help on the Garmin support boards.

Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

Joe

Note - I have not recently updated the version.  It has been 3.20 since I received this unit 6 weeks ago.

  • I have no idea Joe - for a more "targeted" audience you can try posting to http://forums.garmin.com/.

  • This may not help, but I had something similar on my 305 one run, and I figured out that I was still in indoor mode. Not sure why the GPS pace showed up, but there it was... Your problem with the time not resetting sounds different though. Anyways, thought I'd mention it.

  • If you call the Garmin folks they can walk you through it obviously but the first thing they will have you do is update the software to the 3.2 version so you should do that first and see if that corrects the problem.
  • It was no use -- I had to do a factory reset. YUCK! I tried turning the GPS on and off. Soft resets. Switching modes.....all to no avail.

The only good from this was that the rep I spoke with (at length), gave me his email address so I can contact him directly with any problems. He did state that this issue is now a 'known problem' and is being addressed....but then again, so is the 'Not Keeping Time when indoors issue'....

  • Yuck is right. I hope they figure out how to resolve the "known problem"!
  • It's funny you write this post as I was just wondering about my Garmin 305. I've had it for years and love it but it has become real glitchy lately and it's rather annoying. I use the foot pod and occasionally the HR monitor. First it wouldn't pick up the foot pod until 5-10 minutes in to the run, if at all. Then it would show time but very little distance. Might go for an hour run and have it record 1 mile. When I upload it sometimes the rTSS and IF numbers would be way out of whack. An easy run would net me an IF of 1.3. I switched out the foot pod battery. I've tried running indoors and out. It works sometimes but not all the time and I can't seem to pinpoint the issue. Thought maybe it's just getting old.

Anyone else having recent issues with the 305?

  • @ Tom - Time for a new battery? After three years, mine started acting "glitchy", and a battery did the trick. Another possibility is water contaimination - the seal getting corrupted/broken somehow.

  • @Al. Didn't think you could replace the battery. Do you have to send it back, like the old Polar stuff? Looks like a completely sealed unit.
  • I think for about $85 Garmin will "repair" a forerunner 305 sent back to them. Whether it's a new battery or a refurbished different watch sent back to you depends on their whim, I guess. It's a *little* cheaper than just buying a new watch nowadays. I assume you've already tried the "hold the mode and reset buttons down at the same time for 5 seconds followed by the power button" reset method.

  • @Al, right now I'm just at the annoyed stage and haven't done anything about it. I was thinking about just buying a new one, but was hoping for a quick fix solution. Your ideas are much better! Thx.
