frustrated setting this CycleOps Spd/Cad sensor up, tips?
sensor is placed on left seatstay. the cycleops logo on the sensor is facing the inside/wheel/magnet. the magnet is secure and comes very close to the sensor.
Turn on the Joule. Go to sensors. go to speed sensor. hit start pairing. nothing. 00000 blinks for about 30 seconds and quits. doesn't successfully pair with the sensor.
If I can get it to pair, I just have to activate it and then I'll actually have some idea how slow I'm going. Right now, inside and out, I'm staying zoned into the watts, but I want that speed (and thus distance) up and running by the time I take most of the workouts outside.
What gives?

Seems like what you're doing should work. Is the sensor awake before you start pairing? For most Speed Sensors, rotating the wheel will wake up the sensor. Rotate the crank to wake up the cadence sensor. Maybe try removing the battery from the sensor and putting it back? Have a spare battery to try?
Was just surfing around for Cycleops spd/cad sensor problems - It is an Ant+ sensor, right? I think they have 2.4 coded sensors too. They're not Ant+ compatible.
Coded 2.4 sensor::

Quarq.
just spoke with a fella at Saris. was told that it doesn't matter. The Joule picks up both.
will be rechecking spd/cad toggle, and may throw a new battery in there. I described my setup and he said it was spot on.
I'll keep trying stuff.
Sorry dude, thought I had something for ya there. Regardless, and because I'm stubborn and want to help you, I copied this right from the Joule manual:
Compatibility
Joule 2.0 is compatible with any ANT+ compatible power meter, speed sensor, cadence sensor
or heart rate strap. For more information on ANT+ compatible devices, please visit www.thisisant.
com. Note: Joule 2.0 is not compatible with combination speed/cadence sensors, wired
version of PowerTap and non-ANT+ PowerTap models such as the SL 2.4.
While this doesn't really provide a definitive answer, it does say that the Joule is NOT compatible with non-ANT+PowerTap models such as the SL 2.4. Which begs the question, why, if it's NOT compatible with the non-ANT+PowerTap SL 2.4, would it then be compatible with your 2.4 coded spd/cad sensor? I'm no expert, I'm just sayin.
Good luck.
Oh, and if this turns out to be a dead battery - you owe me a Coke!
thx for the help.
Chris
Sorry, I quick glanced over your question and saw Bob's response so I thought I couldn't help. I have the Garmin spd/cadence sensor the same thing worked for me it wouldn't pick it up. I put it right next to the sensor and it worked. Can you manual zero your quarq from the joule either? If you can't you need the beta firmware, I am waiting for a response from saris still haven't heard anything. If I get it I'll e-mail it to you.
I was in the exact situation as you. I have a Quarq + Joule that came with a Cycleops Speed/Cad sensor via a 3rd party, ironically its a Speed OR a Cadence Sensor, not both. I could nor have ever been able to get the Cyleops sensor to pair with the Joule regardless of battery or placement next to any sensors. I figured that it was not ANT+ and the Joule couldn't read it afterall and just threw it back on the shelf (I have a GSC-10 anyway but swapping between bikes is annoying).
I'll try pairing it right next to the Joule itself and see if that makes a difference. Thanks for the tip.
