Oceanside 70.3 - April 2, 2011

Anyone know where I can find Coach Rich's podcast on the Oceanside 70.3 race mentioned here:

http://www.endurancenation.us/en_forums/showthread.php?t=6906

4/7/09: "Caught Rich's podcast on the course though which was really helpful!"

I checked the podcasts online and am now going through iTunes. Haven't found it yet.

Also, are there any other good videos/articles/blogs I should be reading?

The swim is the swim and the run is flat. My only concern is the bike and strategy.

Comments

  • Found it! In the Apple Podcast titled "Ironman California 70.3 Course Talk by Rich Strauss" dated 4/1/2009. 25:30...perfect for the drive home from work.
Anyone else going to be at Oceanside in 5-1/2 weeks?
  • I'll see you there. First time racing at Oceanside and I'm going in off nothing but OS type training and no race rehearsals so it could be a pleasent surprise or a big blow up on the run.

Thanks for sharing the podcast, I'll have to check it out.
  • Only my 2nd HIM and will be on a new bike that's supposed to arrive early next week. Mostly followed the OS training. Hoping for a strong race. I still have some work to do.
  • This is an awesome race!!  I was a slacker and was late to register so I could not get a spot, but this is my favorite HIM course.  Good luck to everyone racing, I will be there cheering you all on.

    GP

  • I'll be there, first time in EN gear! I'll also be on a new bike (first tri bike), and hoping the weather here continues to improve so that it is not my first time on open road on that bike!
  • I will be there too. I joined EN right before IMFL last year, so this will be my first race in EN gear as well.

Thanks to Brian for tracking down that podcast. One thing to note about it; WTC updated the course maps this year to make them look nicer, but you will want to be looking at last years maps to understand some of things Coach R is talking about during his detailed description of the bike. If you open last year's Athlete Guide (which is still posted on the race website) and scroll down a ways, you will find those maps.

I'm looking forward to meeting all of you at the race!
  • Jim Vance, a San Diego pro and coach posted a course preview a couple of years ago, along with a couple of videos. Here's a link to it:

  • I just paid/downloaded it. I will listen to it later today and provide a summary and comments. $7.99 isn't bad...as long as it's useful.
  • I love this course.  Looks like a new EN crew going this year.  Rich's podcast is right on.

FYI - On the bike, miles 30 to 45 are the hills.  One climb and a couple of big rollers (well, rollers for NorCal).  That is the hardest part of the whole course.  The rest of the way is down in aero and hammer (at 80 to 85%, of course).  Especially that first 20+ heading up the coastline.  You can really get moving.  Hopefully you won't have any head wind heading back to town that last 10 or so miles.  The run is basically flat with some concrete and the swim is all down hill.

    Have fun, guys!

  • Finally listened to Jim Vance podcast. It's just OK. He recorded the podcast in front of an audience and references the maps a lot. I'm glad I got it...only $7.99 and I got a few things out of it. I also listened to Coach Rich's course explanation. Similarly, he references maps a lot (makes sense). It's nice hearing each coach's strategies and tips.
  • Good news:
The new SC arrived last week...I've been riding it on the trainer all week. First tri bike...a bit different from the road bike.
    I ordered Zipp 808's with a PT SLC+...was supposed to arrive Mon/Tues.

    Bad news:
My Zipp's got delayed and I won't have them for Oceanside next weekend.
Apparently they ran out of stickers and won't ship them without the stickers. Weird.
Do you guys think it's worth renting Zipps for the weekend? If so, what setup? 808's, 808/1080, 808/Sub-9?

  • If you are going to rent, you may as well get the best combo you can ... 808 firecrest/sub-9. If you don't have much experience with race wheels, I would go with a 404 firecrest/sub9. Because you said sub=9, i assume you want tubies. If you what the clinchers it is a 404 or 808 front with a 900 clincher disc you want.

FWIW, I'm running a 808 firecrest carbon clincher set with a wheel cover in the rear for oceanside.
  • @Matt - My mistake...want to go with clinchers. I have a friend who can borrow me a set of 808 clinchers. Wheel rentals is around $200...that's a lot to maybe buy me a little time. See you in 6 days...
