What is your dream tri bike?

So my wife informed me that I "may" be able to buy a new bike in 3 months time.  Basically I can buy what I want.  So what say you EN, what would you buy?

Comments

  • First of all; what was the Tucker secret to earn the SAUs for such a purchase?

All tri bikes are fine; go for the comfort and one which positions you the best for aero vs power tradeoff, and of course the color scheme. It's not about the bike, it's about the engine.
  • Dream bike? Trek Speed Concept, Zipps, Quarq, Di2 gruppo. Nuff said.
  • Thanks 2 heaping helpings of SAUs, I have 2 dream bikes in the stable:

    1) Giant Advanced Trinity SL-1 with HED tri-spoke front wheel and HED Jet Disk rear wheel, Shimano Dura-Ace 7900 throughout, 53-39 standard crank
    2) Quintana Roo CD-01 advanced composite frameset, Zipp 404s front and back, all SRAM Red build with RTC shifters, 50-34 compact crank, Profile Design base and aero bars

I love them both dearly! If I could have a third race bike I would look at the Speed Concept but I'm not sure the value or performance is any better than my Giant. The rear storage compartment on the Trek looks sierra hotel, but when you open it up, it just looks stupid...as in what the heck is going to fit in there and how will you get it out with fat fingers??
  • I like the speed concept, but I've always really liked the specialized TT bikes. I think they are very sharp looking. If I could, I'd also go SRAM red and crack based PM.
  • Scott Plasma Premium, SRAM Red, Quarq, Zipp R2C, Zipp 404/808 Firecrest.

  • felt b2 pro, speed concept, blue triad sl....what can i say I like the color blue

  • Price no object i think a serotta whatever they are calling the custom TT frame now would be hard to beat. 10k for the frame is a bit pricey but you did say dream. di2 for sure. I will have it on my next tri bike.
  •  It is what I am riding now, Argon18 E112 Dura Ace, Zipp 404/808, Vision Cockpit, Quarq, Team FSA crank.

  • I'm on a specialzed transition, i forget the model above but you could do better.  For me this is a dream bike as I was on a used 98 Cannondale up until last year.  It's more that enough bike for my slow a$$.  I still need the race wheels and upgraded components, but I've got time for that.

Remember unless you are going with Chris' 10K custom job, go with the best fit.  It seems that you have no specific bike in mind.  When I was looking I sent my measurements and a video to Todd at ttbike fit and listed the local bikes available.  He then listed them as Specialized best, cervelo p2 and argon and one model that would be more problematic for my fit.

From there I walked in and bought the bike as there were no floor models as only 2 left for shipping.

  • Easy to say price is no object, but of course price is an object at some level.

Frame selection needs to be guided by your body type. (Except if you go custom) Go to slowtwitch and read some of this: http://www.slowtwitch.com/Bike_Fit/index.html (especially "Choosing a bike for stack and reach") That should narrow the selection to a degree.

That said, the Treks and Scotts are pretty sexy. But - if they fit you - don't forget to look into the Cervelos. Not so sexy these days as some, but they are totally proven and not a lot of fuss.

If price is no object, the DI2 looks sweet. If price is a little bit of an object, the SRAM Red drivetrain sure sounds nice.

PM would depend on what you have now regarding wheels and/or what you want to do - i.e., crank or PT-based.

  • I am happy with my bike.  However, if money and science were no object I would opt for a new (i.e. younger) stronger, faster motor.

    Genetics David, genetics!

  • Thanks all for the responses. I have some ideas about what I would like but wanted to see what others were thinking as well. Currently have a P2C which is fine, but may be a little small for me. Been told by two fitters that maybe a custom bike might be the way to go. So I was kicking around a Guru or Serotta if I went custom. Di2 seems definitely to be needed as well.

@William, thanks for the link. I should check out the bike fitting stuff from ST as it is mucho important.
@Chris, for 10k, that frame better come with a reach around.
  • Who cares if it fits as long as it looks cool!!!  Here's my dream bike all spec'd out and ready to roll...   tinyurl.com/4mce637

Black on Black Trek Speed Concept 9.9 with Di2...

  •  Here it is:

    http://www.serotta.com/Bikes/TriathlonTT/MeiViciAE/

8995 for the frame and fork, 15000 with Di2...very nice looking in person. Should come with an armed guard to watch in it transition while you are swimming or running.

These are stupid pricey as well but seem to work for Faris:

After you buy the frame you have to race in a speedo as you cant afford the rest of the kit :-)

  • @Tucker, any bike is a good bike...no one needs a custom frame. Sorry. It bugs the crap out of me that fitters say you need custom...it's like...yeah, I know my job is to fit you on this bike, but that's hard for me, so I am going to make my life easier by telling you that you are special and need a (minimum) $7k frame because you are so unique. No one is that unique...or at least you aren't. I'll get off my soapbox now...
  • @Patrick, are you saying I'm not unique? Wow that is harsh.
  • @Tucker- Sounds like he's saying your just another a-hole from NJ

At least I'm not a Masshole

  • Pretty sure the whole EN philosophy is predicated on RnP's belief that none of us are unique.

    ;-)
  • I'm riding mine. Blue Triad SL w/SRAM Red gruppo and Hed3 front. Be nice to have the Quarq which I am working on buying through Rich so I can ride cool rear wheels.

William's link is a good one. I went to a retul fitter last year to get my "ideal" fit measurements. Found that I needed "tall and short" and that Blue and Cannondale were great options. Loved the fact that Blue has a great rep and isn't on every bike rack. Fell in love more when I rode it.
  • Just saw a new dream bike.  BMC Time Machine TT01!

  • @Tucker - that looks pretty nice and I bet we will see the Raelerts on the them this year. I wonder why they stayed with normal brakes and cable routing when all the super bikes have integrated them? Also, Didn't Easton make a big deal out of how dimples provided no benefit... but the disc appears to be dimpled. It actually looks VERY similar to a Zipp 900 tubie from the way the panels/layers are constructed.
  • @Matt, yes the Raelerts will definitely be on these bikes this year. I thought the same thing about the cables. And at that price, around $12,000 for just the frame!, you would think their superior Swiss engineering would integrate them. Doesn't seem to be Di2 ready either?
As for the wheel, I think it is a ZIPP with Easton labels. When I was dicking around researching this bike I came across this picture, http://www.cyclingnews.com/news/photos/bmc-pull-out-all-the-stops-for-evans-time-trial-bike/119758 Who knows?

Not necessarily. You are very unique if you are going to spend $12k on a BMC frame. I am just saying you don't need to do it to be faster. image

  • But it looks so hot Patrick!
