Swim T Pace Question

Apologies if this has been posted  before, my search function doesn't want to play ball today.

So, week 4 of OS swim plan and today was T Pace Test day. Never swum over 500m in one go so was a little aprehensive. Not sure how hard to go out so just took it steady. Had some left in the tank at the end so probably could have pushed a little harder? Who knows!

I used the data tool, worked out my T Pace which is 1:59. However, my timings were done without flip turns so do I need to take a little off to allow for turns? Or just hit it up with the T Pace I got from today?

I was buzzing after, 19:47 for 1km. This is WEEK 4. I have been swimming 2-3/week tops and doing the rest of the OS plan. EN seem to have this just right. In week 1 I taught myself 2bk, and have been watching swim stuff on youtube; and have watched the seconds fall.

  • Here's my $0.02 worth, to me T-pace is really the same as FTP on the bike or a V-DOT test - it's more a target for training and to see improvements than anything else. So all the same things you do when you test for FTP are the same for T-Pace = same course, conditions etc.

Therefore if you will be doing swim training with flip turns then maybe adjust, and next time you do the test I would suggest you use them during the test if you can to 'keep it all the same'.  Be careful adjusting the test down though as there are some tough swim workouts in these plans that use T-Pace as the speed to swim...

Hope that helps, nice work on the test btw - not easy the first one of the season that is for sure!

  • Thanks Kevin, I hadn't thought of that - makes more sense to not adjust.
  • What Kevin said, it's really just a benchmark pace to use in training, to give you a target to shoot for and keep you honest (working hard)
