Execution of VO2 max run intervals

I am just heading into week #9 OS, the VO2 max block. I won't be running on a track and I won't be running on a "marked course" where I know the precise distances between landmarks.

It is okay to substitue time for distance on these intervals? For example, if my target pace is 6:20 and the interval is 400m, that means 1:34.

I have a Garmin but I suspect the accuracy for distances as short as 200 is questionable.

How do folks handle this situation? I went through the wiki but didn't see anything on this (though possible I missed it).

Thanks much,

Matt

  • I usually do these on a treadmill, and I do them by time, at least the shorter ones. E.g., 200/400 = 45/90 sec.

  • Matt,
I just program the interval into my Garmin. As best I can tell it has been pretty accurate for all the interval distances. The only issue I have encountered is what to do for the "complete recovery": I have experimented with a defined time between intervals, a defined distance, and then just using' lap' to go to next interval when I think I am rested enough.

That being said,i am encountering a problem with my 310; occasionally it shuts down when I hit the lap button. I have reported it to Garmin and so far they are not able to fix it.

  • Yup, time is fine. Differences of a few seconds here and there (from pace variations) just don't matter.
  • Super, sounds good. Thanks everyone for the input.
