Do I take this bet? [update]

I'm essentially a single sport athlete but I've started to run again. The guy I'm running with is still into triathlon. No surprise lots of tough guy talk on our runs and race times come up. My fastest half is 4:36? like 5 years ago. Nate's is 5:05 last year. I say I still have it. Nate thinks I'm done. It's on. I told him I'd spot him 10 minutes and I'd still win. The loser pays the winners entry.

Now we just need a race. Maybe Cedar Point Half in September

Good bet? or the greatest bet ever.

  • Seems like a good bet. Should you take advantage of your superior bike ability at a tough bike course? That would be my only suggestion.
  • Great bet...and if you are a stronger cyclist you ought to choose IM 70.3 Missouri...something like 3200ft of elevation in 56 miles. It is a great swim and a flat run from what I understand. That is one sick bike course!
  • I would take the bet as who doesn't love a great challenge.

    Kick Ass

  • I'm a sucker for a bet. But before you jump in, just consider what other goals you have for the year and if taking this bet is gonna blow up your other priorities.

But of course, You'll smoke him :-)
  • Awesome bet, Dan! You're gonna crush him.

Next bet...challenge him to an Xterra!
  • Oh, that sounds fun! You could do Timberman. All the cool people are doing Timberman this year.

Excellent!!!!!!!  Tough bike course and you'll have a huge amount of EN Mojo (as well as Moo Jo) there to support you!

By the way Dan, this was a rhetorical question, right?

  • @DAn, didn't you sell all your tri stuff? will you go retro??? image Yes to the bet!
  • Yes, but you have to do SBR in bibs + jersey, bike on a roadie in the drops with matching pro kit, white shoes, etc

  • Heck yeah! Who doesn't like a free race. My fat @ass can skinny up for this challenge. Dig the support.

I have no gear tri since I sold it and I'm considering riding my road bike so I can wear my white shoes. I'll probably rent a wetsuit. the HIM swim is a little far without one.

I was hoping we could do Steelhead since it's within the state but our schedules are matching up. So we are still looking for race in August/September. I do need time to skinny up. End of July could work.

    I'll keep you updated.

Goals and priorities? I don't have or set those anymore. This race would be the first "goal" race in almost 3 years.
The only race on the schedule is the Lumberjack 100. I'm still made about crashing out so I'm going back.

  • TIM-BER-MAN!......TIM-BER-MAN!.....TIM-BER-MAN!
  • I've got a similar bet going with my boss this summer. High motivation factor. You'll smoke him!
  • Hi Dan, I would take that bet. I would also not talk too much smack and just quietly with humility do the training, praise your partner for how well he is doing in training and then come race day... Ever so politely open up a can of whoop assimage!

Take a quick shower and meet him at the finish lineimage.

  • @Nemo Timberman is out because it the same day as the bike race I'm putting on.

@Carrie I've told Nate that if wants to win you should probably encourage me by buying me beer instead of asking to run. The smack talk has cooled down now that $250 is on the line (if we race an M-dot race).
  • Nate is being skapegoated here. You just want to race again.

True. I miss the smell of neoprene.

Funny thing on today's run (12) he said didn't care about losing the money. He wants to see me race again...ahh shucks. No we didn't hug after that. but I did pick up the pace. That's crazy talk.

  • Update:

There is a new Half Ironman that's going to happen and it's 8 miles from my house. http://www.grandrapidstriathlon.com/ Total hometown race. Perfect except it's on June 5th. 80 days from now.

Nate registered and said we can go head to head with no time handicap. I just have to get my fat butt to the line. Loser pays winner's entry. $165

    damn...80 days...so much for eating

Nothing like a a dead line and money on the line to motivate. Rock it

  • You can totally do this Dan!!! We can rebuild youimage! You have so much talent. A guy that can ride over 200 miles alone at 20 mph can do anything!! Losing a few pounds is free speed. Your friend is going down!! Let's DO this!
  • How was day one of not eating? image

Oh yeah, doing it like that makes it even sweeter!

  • almost 6 months later...

I'll be racing my first triathlon in 3 years tomorrow morning and the bet is still on. Loser pays winners entry. So $70 on the line.

What are you racing? Remember, you have to change your shoes during the race.

    Showtime!

  • I raced Reed Lake today. My hometown race so I got to sleep and and ride by bike to the start.

It's a long Sprint or short Olympic distance. (.5,18,5)

We both got seeded start in the 1st wave and I was going to give him a 5 minute and he turned it down.

Nate put 3 minutes on me in the swim but I caught him at the 3 mile mark and continued to crush it coming off the bike in the top 15. However...my run isn't what it once compared to the leaders I put more time into nate.

    The tale of the tape

    Swim (.5mile)
    Me: 16:25 (186th OA)
    Nate: 13:56

    Bike (18 miles)
me: 41:06 (3 OA /1:50 faster then when I had the fastest bike split 3 years ago)
    Nate: 47:54

    Run (5 miles)
    me: 36:36 (173rd OA)
Nate: 45:11 (ouchy...he limped in with IT issue. That wasn't in the plan.)

    Final score
    Me 1:37:36 (43 OA/718)
    Nate: 1:50:09

Pretty good result for my return to triathlon.
  • Awesome!! Way to go Dan!!
  • Welcome back! It's about time... :-)
