Bike component ?s

I need help with choice in bike component selection. I need to upgrade my road bike to a 10 speed so I can switch my power tap wheel between road bike and tribike.  My road bike is ? 2001 Bianchi Talladega 9 sp shimano ultegra components.

I am pretty sure I am going to get this groupo set on ebay and update everything, cause it is due ( I think).http://cgi.ebay.com/NEW-Shimano-201...Zp5197.m7Q

One of my goals this year is to really understand  my bike better and how it works etc. No better way then to JUST DO It. so I have tools, a stand and videos with on internet ( God help me)

So here are my questions- which bottom bracket do I get, the Italian or English? Why?

Which front derailleur? Braze on, 34.9 clamp on, 31.8 clamp on or 31.8 clamp on with 28.6 shims) Again, why?

The other parts I am getting a 170 mm 50/34 compact and a 12/25 rear cassette.

I would appreciate any feedback, Thanks!

  • Hey Tracy,

Sorry, I know very little about Bianchi bikes. Your best bet is to what for some one familiar with the bikes or stop at a shop and ask them.

Italian vs English has to do with the treads in the bottom bracket and are not interchangable. You have to get the right one.

Braze on is what most newer roadbikes and tri bikes have - the FD mount is already on the frame and there is no clamp or band going around the seat tube. Most likely you have a slive band that the derailer is mounted on and you need a clamp the same since. You can take off your current one and measure it to figure this out. My guess is you need 31.8 as that is the most common, but again I'm not familiar with Bianchi bikes.

Hope the helps at least give you some context.

The group you picked out looks great if you know you want Shimano.

Sorry to make this more complicated for you, but have you looked at SRAM groups instead? The reason I say that is: A) Rival and Apex both cost less and B) the hoods on SRAM shifts are better for people with smaller hands (i.e. me and most women). The shifters have less reach, a different shape, and the lever can be adjusted to be closer to the bars.

I have SRAM rival on my road bike and it works every bit as good as Red for a fraction of the cost.
  •  Thanks Matt

The only real reason I was picking Shimano is because I have that on my tri bike. If I am switching my wheel between bikes, will my 11/28 that is on there now work with the SRAM components?

  • 10 speed SRAM and shamano are compatible with each other so switching wheels will be no problem.
