Wheel covers: help me pick a wheel to cover
I have two wheels with powertap hubs (don't ask) and I am planning to get wheel covers for one. The wheels are:
- Bontrager aeolius 6.5 carbon rim, powertap sl+, weight uncertain (the wheel without powertap is listed at 920g)
- Mavic open pro, 32 spoke, powertap sl+, weight listed at 1180g
If I remember correctly, powertap hubs add around 300g over standard hubs, negating any weight difference between the two. I am also not certain that there is sufficient clearance from large cog to spokes to avoid chain rub against the wheel cover on the Bontrager wheel.
SO, if weight is not an issue, and if the aero advantage of wheel cover trumps that of the deep carbon rims,
- should I get a cover for the Mavic and race with my training wheel?!!!
- Is there any reason to believe that wheel covers are more aerodynamic when put on aero rims over standard rims?

Short answer...contact Wheelbuilders in El Monte, California. http://www.wheelbuilder.com/ In my opinion, he won't steer you wrong.
Got my wheels from them as well. I went with flashpoint 60's as I knew I would never buy race dedicated wheels. They are great. They are not sold under the SRAM brand name since SRAM bought Zipp.
If this helps, I'm running a 12-25 10 ring cassette with wheelcover from Wheelbuilder. No clearance problems at all.
