Recipes for trail mix?

I really like trail mix and would like to start making my own and experimenting with different combinations of ingredients.

Does anyone have some recipes they'd like to share that I can use as a starting point? Any advice or guidelines for me as I experiment (i.e. what kind of nuts to use, rules of thumb on proportioning, etc)?

Cheers, Matt

  • The mix I use is really simple: half nuts, half dried fruit.

Typical mix is 1 lb dry roasted peanuts (low or no salt), 8 oz chopped dates, 8 oz Craisons.

I don't care for tree nuts, and chocholate is messy when warm. I used to do all kinds of differrent ingrediants but it was expensive. Now I look at it as a bag of calories - 1/2 cup ~ 700 cal. Some as simple sugars the rest as fat and protien. Easy to mix, easy to eat, and your just going to crap it out anyway..... =:-0
  • Whatever's on my coworkers desk. It always tastes better when its on someone else's plate.
  • Walmart's generic Great Value brand, the Indulgent Trail mix, which includes: white choc drops, choc drops, peanut butter drops, almonds, peanuts, cashews, golden raisins and cranberries (150 cals per 3tbsp)...SO yummy! Great road/air trip food!
  • My wife always makes ours. 1 can peanuts, 1 can cashews, 1 box (or bag) of black raisins, 1 bag M&M's (mini's if you can find 'em). Simple and yummy.

But, I think I'm gonna head to Walmart to grab that Indulgent Mix. Thanks Scott!
  • TJ's Simply Almond, Cashew, Cranberry mix is my favorite. It's often "out of stock" when I get to the store and I'll just buy the ingredients and make it myself. I'll occasionally add pistachios when I make it myself.

I love chocolate, but not in my trail mix- too messy.
