When do you get back in the open water?

Last year was my first year in triathlon, and my first year swimming. I didn't get out of the pool and into open water until early June.

This year I have a HIM in mid-May and I want to get some open water wetsuit swims in ahead of time. I live in Cincinnati; when is the water temp in the midwest generally bearable for wetsuit swims?

  • As soon as the temps are warm enough I start exchanging one swim for an OWS each week. But I have had a pretty big fear of open water in the past that drives me to do stuff like that. If OW swimming doesn't bother you- two or three swims in the wettie before race day to be sure everything fits and isn't rubbing is probably enough.
  • Any and every chance I have to do an OWS with at least one other person, I'll take advantage. I'm not a good water person, so the experience is priceless!
  • As soon as Lake Michigan lets me.  The first few are full wetsuit, neoprene hood, booties, etc...water in mid 50s.

My first sprints start rolling around mid-may, so I'm hoping to get in the lake 1x a week for longer swims starting mid/late April.

It's definitely brain-freezingly cold though, and getting out of the water & biking home is no picnic either.
