Shimano components - suggestions on gearing

Not sure if this is the right spot to post this or not, but here goes.

I went through Rich's video on gearing for dummies and think I have the basics down.  I think I need a compact crank (50/34) with a crank length of 175 (since I'm 6'3") and a 25/12 cassette.  I'm currently riding a Scott road bike with aero bars and have Shimano 105 components which include a standard crank (53/39) and crank length of 172.5" along with a 25/12 9-speed cassette.

Questions is: should I go out and get a Shimano 105 compact crank (50/34) with a 175 length to match the components I have or does anyone suggest anything else?

  • Jason,

Given you w/kg of 2.9 yes you could use a compact and perhaps even a 12/27 or 28.  What type of races will you be doing this year.  At INWI you could definitely use a 50/34.

Having said that with a 9 speed in the back this will create some gaps on a 27 or 28 cassette.

If it were me and I had the cash I'd go with a compact.

  • If you can spring for the upgrade, I would go with Ultegra. It's lighter and should perform better than the 105. For just the crank, you could mix component groups and get a SRAM. I personally run a SRAM Force compact with ultegra everything else, and really like it.
