Travel Plans

Has everyone made reservations yet?  I'm thinking of booking with the Courtyard Marriot.   I'm debating on whether I should arrive on Thursday 4 Aug and depart Wednesday 10 Aug or slide everythng back one day to 3 - 9 Aug.  I've only got time and money to stay one week

Comments

  • Arriving in munich on the third.  Leaving from Rome on the seventeeth.

Regensburg hotel = eurostars park-hotel Maximillian.     I don't know much about this hotel.  Looks neat on the outside and seems to be close to the race action.

On the ninth down to northern Italy and then Umbria for the rest of the time.

  • I am still debating options, but would err on the side of coming early to give yourself time to recover from jet lag pre race.

We are booked into the Aldtstadthotel Arch to arrive on Thursday and leave on Tuesday. I think we will likely get to Munich on Monday and spend a couple days there before heading to Regensburg.

  • @ Kevin - I was thinking of coming a day later for two reasons. One, the last time I raced in Europe, I arrived on Wed and was slipping backwards by Sunday's race. Saturday would have been better. Two, my wife prefers the time after the race when I'm not tense. I'm thinking I could take a train trip to Praque on the Tuesday after the race and tromp around the city center for 6 hrs...just to say I was there.
  • OK - My wife and I are booked at the Courtyard by Marriott arriving 3 August (Wed) and departing 10 Aug (Wed). Flight reservations are the next gouge! Has anyone made an airline selection based on bike baggage fees? I've always heard to avoid United. I flew to Holland in 2008 on Delta and was not charged for my bike bag on the way over but paid about $160 on the way back. I want to lock down all my logistics this month so I can concentrate on my 12 week plan which starts...next month!

@ Robin - Italy would be a wonderful trip. I've passed through Rome on a flight but never had the opportunity to see anything. Perhaps in the future!

@ Kevin - I stayed in Munich once. If you haven't seen the Glockenspiel chime then consider that a must! There are some videos of it on youtube but it's just not the same as being there.

  • Sorry I can't comment on US airlines, I'm coming from Singapore where on SQ bikes fly for free :-).

We arrive Frankfurt Wed evening, driving to Regensburg arriving Thursday arvo. Staying in a cute little cottage apartment by the river, 5 mins from the Stone Bridge (booked it like 3 months ago).

We are staying in Regensburg till Tuesday morning, then Italy (Venice, Rome, Florence) and then 5 nights in Paris - out on 25th Aug - one big holiday of the year (got to earn those SAU's somehow :-).
  • Yes Italy should be fun.  Two nights in northern Italy in the German speaking part.   Sarntal.   Then six nights in a fairly isolated village in Umbria.
