mancona's Oceanside 70.3 Race Report
Sorry I've been MIA for a few days, it's been a really busy week and I'm finally able to sneak in a few minutes on the computer before packing to fly home tomorrow morning.
I wish there was more time to make it to Breakwater but between the race and getting my bike taking longer than expected, having to go to TBT, and then the awards and other commitments after that it just didn't happen.
I did see a few EN kits on the course. You guys looked great and I tried to yell when I could.
I'll hopefully write up a full report on the flight tomorrow but here is the quick recap.
- Swam 31:47 - I was going for under 30 minutes, but swam solo most of the way and zig zaged all over as could get on a good set of feet and my sighting sucked... need to work on my open water skills.
- Bike 2:30:19 - 5 minutes slower than my goal time. Due to a combination of me being chicken on the descents in the wind and the strong headwind...details in the full report.
- Run 1:20:03 - 2 minute PR and 2 minutes under my goal time. My garmin broke in the swim so I was running be feel and splits at the mile markers so i'm pretty pleases with it. Ended up shoulder to shoulder with the AG winner for the last 2 miles... you can read about it here: http://jameswalshracing.com/2011/04...eport.html
- Overall 4:26:09, 4th AG - 6 minutes slow
- Taking in more calories on the bike and run worked
- Turned down a Vegas slot and missed a Kona slot by under 2 minutes.
- I beat Rinny, but 48 guys went faster than I did.
- Great course and very competitive race. I highly recomend it and may just have to do it again.

Solid race Matt. Your swim keeps getting better and you ran great off the bike. It's even more impressive that you've been doing all your training on the treadmill and trainer. Bodes well for a great season for you! Looking forward to the full report.
Wow, how hard is that bike course? Interested to see the file on that. Nice run!
@Paul - yes, I passed on Vegas due to IMWI. I will likely try to do Vegas next year.
@Chris - Most of the Pros (including some top cyclist) go around 2:15. It's a tough course because the last 30 miles are hills and headwind. I probably could have rode just under 2:25, but due to me being a wimp and braking/coasting way more than ever and holding back at the begining I went 2:30. Here is the power data. For reference around 215 watts got me a 2:16 at Racine, and a 2:18 at High Cliff last year.

Thanks Guys.

@Carrie - a teammate just sent me two pictures from the run ....
sounds like a brutal bike course to be that much slower, remind me not to race there!
Nice work
The Vegas race is an easy one to miss and fill in with another one at nearly the same venue anyway. We're from Salt Lake-a 4.5 hour drive- so we race there alot in spring and fall. Rage and Pumpkinman are 1/2's right there in Boulder City. There's only one road on the lake that they can get out that far on the bike anyway. Kind of a cool area overall though.
Congrats! and easy on the brakes!
Shoulder to shoulder with the AG group winner... except those last 200 yards when he says you dropped him!! hahaha way to go!
@ Matt, nice job on the run PR! When I started my run and saw that yellow streak go by headed in the opposite direction, that must have been you flying to the finish . And I agree with you, that wind on the bike was not fun.
